Hi, Looking to get 220 volt out to the garage. Maybe 30 feet from house (electric panel) to garage. Just digging a trench and burying some cable doesn't sound like it would be up to code. Having trouble just getting someone to give me a quote, nobody has come yet. I was thinking of an outlet on the outside of the house and making an extension cord, but that isn't without it's own problems,ie hooking it up and unhooking it,couldn't close garage door all the way, etc. Any suggestions??

I used underground grade wire and ran it from the box on the house into the garage and put up a small breaker box.

The safest way would be to have your electric company pull a new line to the garage and have an electrician hook it up. (But that also costs the most)

Spend the money and do it properly. Dont take chances with electricity
Likely your insurance would'nt be valid if you hooked it up to mains yourself.
When we trench, minimum depth is 600mm and the cable goes in tough pvc conduit and the supply must be protected by an rcd breaker. Dont know what you're local codes would be though..

Might as well spend a bit more than the basic package and get a splitter box mounted in the garage with sererate circuits for power and lighting, cause you'll plan on using power tools out there and you'll be better off in the long run.

Just how I'd do it, thats all

Maybe you could do the hard work............

Dig a hole, put in conduit, pull the wire..... whatever..................  and just have an electrician come in to do the final connection.

And it where me and I was digging a hole...........

I would put in a couple conduits for future whatevers.

I would still check local codes.....

but here is some info..........

It would seem that acceptable Cable, cable in PVC, cable in Steel conduit, is directly related to bury depth.

+1 What 2 Gunz said.

It may not help with this project, but for any beginners out there, a great book for help with wiring is Black and Decker's "Complete Guide To Home Wiring".  It costs about $22 at Home Depot and it's worth $2,200.   There are other beginner books, but in this case the illustrations are the difference.

I was thinking of running a gas line also, same "trench" ok??

You can find a book with proper codes for your area at the local diy store.  Find out how deep and wide the trench needs to be, making sure you're far enough away of other lines.  Get the proper wire and conduit, then call the electrician.  He or she will want to see the materials so don't cover all up and expect him to hook it up, I wouldn't.

This way you save the most money and you're sure everything's up to snuff.  Don't forget to get a permit.

any new construction in your area?? catch one of the electrician and ask if they do side work, he tells you what you need and you get the permit and do the manual labor then give him 100 bucks to come by and hook it up for you on a saturday or something

When I put up my small 16x24 shop in 2000 I installed a 60 amp panel and ran buried conduit from the garage panel to the shop. I asked an electric I know to check my work because I wired the shop for both 110 & 220. Afterwards he made he final connection between both panels and got the permit signed off. Here in NorCal you cannot run a gas line in the same conduit as wiring but since you have to trench anyway, run gas out there. :Twocents:

My garage that is wired for 220v the electric company came out and installed the line in the ground from the pole to the shop and charged $260.00 they trenched it and installed it into the box, they said if I were running a welder not to run the line off the house because it would cause problems.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.
