got that set of original goodyear polyglas GT's this winter and changed over to check um out and instantly noticed how bad those things are. They look really cool but terrible for drivin around on. so after looking cool for a month and being scared beyond belief I decided to put the radials back on tonight. Man what a difference!!! reminder to self. those polyglas tires are for very close local shows ONLY! May look cool (original look and all) but thats about it.  :rotz:

Get some redline radials from Diamond Back Classics and have the best of both worlds......

It's crazy isn't it?  Makes you wonder how we all drove around on those things at one time.

Bias ply tires are only any good for offroading.  And only then becuase they're so squishy :)
[ŌŌ]ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ[ŌŌ] = 68
[ŌŌ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ŌŌ] = 69
(ŌŌ)[ƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗ](ŌŌ) = 70

Got a friend with a '55 Crown Vic that insists on driving with bias-ply tires.  BTW, how long are they good for?  I'm told that bias-ply tires last longer than radials; funny thing is that Crown Vic has had the same tires for 23 years.  Tell me that's not a good idea?

Ghoste

Rubber is still going to deteriorate from UV and elements.  I think 23 years is well past when I would feel safe on them.

ODZKing

They were on there when I bought the 67.  Like driving on roller skates.
I don't care how they look, they were gone.

myk

Yeah exactly.  And the freaking idiot wonders why no one wants to ride in his car.  Hell, even going to and from car shows I always make sure to run away from him to keep our distance and stay safe-not that the Charger and I need much running to stay ahead of a '55 Ford anyway... :smilielol:

Tilar

When radials first came out I took a brand new set off my truck and gave them away because those bastards walked all over the road. Now I'm used to them. Want a real "ride"? Put radials on the back of your car and bias play on the front... you'll see just how much the radials actually walk on the road.

Too scary to think about.
They did wear well though.

Two mates of mine have period correct crossplys on their 57 & 58 Plymouth Fury's . They do mainly around town but once a year 2 hour trip each way through the hill country to a beach resort car show.
One guy will admit they handle like crap and the other guy will just grin.

I had a 65 HD Holden X2 ( twin carb ) wagon years ago, low miles - ex Dr's car, it came up from the South Island and still had crossply's on it. A couple of weeks later I turned it right around on a drizzly day at a roundabout and took em straight off.

+1 vote for the radials  :yesnod:

Alignments are also a key part of making bias ply or radials work. Bias plys will only tolerate a narrow window of adjustments for them to work and wear well. Radials will tolerate a much wider range of adjustment and still maintian reasonable wear and grip.

I've also noticed bias plys tend to broadcast the traction status much better than radials. A bias ply tends to have a very linear traction curve and the louder it is howling, the closer it is to loosing traction. Once it is lost, you can slowly back off until it regains traction. By contrast, radials tend to not talk as much, ultimately seem to have a higher grip coefficient, but once they loose traction have to nearly be stopped to regain traction.

Charger-Bodie

I happen to think that the repop bias tires work very well. The 40 year old originals are another story.

getting the alignment re-adjusted right now. Im hoping whenever I do decide to put those back on for any short jonts that will help a little. I doubt it though. Like I said. They look real pretty but not make for real driving. :rotz:

Geez, I can't find anyone to do a proper alignment on my Charger. I've tried 2 places with no success. They're all new school and don't know anything about classics.

do the alignment yourself , set the catser to max first ,front adjuster all the way out & the rear all the way in , use a level across the rim to set the camber , you may have to back off the caster a little & set toe to 1/16 - 1/8 "

I won't forget when I drove my 70 for the first time.  On a road by my house it is two lanes and had a separated shoulder.  I got into one of the ruts in the shoulder and almost crapped in my pants because the those tires.....  I got home, called Coker and got my 15 x 7's and BFGs'.

Okay, doing the toe in is easy I've done that before but the rest has me stumped. I'm stumbling over adjusting the castor and chamber. Don't you need electronic equipment to do that?
