9 is the number I have always heard as well.

I know of 2 that are HEMI 4 speeds, that are black cars from the factory.
Then I have seen 2 440 cars that are factory black.
Then Jim has the other one that I've heard of but haven't had the chance to enjoy in person yet. Probably this summer though, if I don't see him at a show with it, I'll stop by for a visit to check it out.

hemigeno

I know of another one that is probably completely or very nearly restored by now.  They were just starting the resto this time last year.

440/727, X9 exterior & interior, Red stripe.  405187, owned by Tom A.

The pic below was taken 1/12/05, when I was visiting a friend's resto shop in Wisconsin:

69_500

Car looks great with the rocker moldings on it. Were they there origionally or do you know Gene?

Doesn't look like the car needed a lot, just a little freshening up to be very presentable. Of course most owners want their cars to be in top show quality, where as I'd just want one to drive and enjoy. So i'd take a low #2 car anyday.

hemigeno

Danny, I should have mentioned that the tag does not have M25 on it.  Does look good with them though, doesn't it??

The car didn't look bad, probably a 2- driver car.  The owner (Tom A.) wanted a show-stoping, drop-dead gorgeous paint job, underneath and everything.  The guy doing the resto has done black cars before, and a '69 Poncho convertible he did looked great - even 8 years after he did it...  They definitely weren't worried about paint daubs and grease pencil markings, etc.  It will be a gorgeous car when it's done.

69_500

Ah schucks so are they going to keep the rocker moldings on the car after the restoration or not? They looks sweet on there.

So are they "over restoring" the car then? Doing it to better than factory specs, but using the correct parts? Just not doing the runs in the paint, and such.

Even if they don't intend to do the pencil markings and paint daubs, I hope that they photographed where they were so if in the future they decide to go that route they have a way to show that is how it was on that particular car.

nascarxx29

I did find a stack of documentation for a 440 X9 car from shipping memorandum to window sticker and copy of the buildsheet. That was sent to me from a friend wanting to buy this car alongtime back .When the car was in Alabama to photograph and inspect XX29L9B [[[[[[405187]]]]]].Its was paid for by Virginia national bank.Sold to P D Welch & Company Selma Rd Orange VA .And optioned as {A36 performance axle package [B51 power brakes] [C21 center front seat with armrest] [D34Torque flite trans [D56 3.55 axle ratio] [E86 440] [R11 am radio]  [S77 PS] [V88 stripe delete [W21 road wheels] [Y39 special order] [T82 whitewalls]  409 destination charge

It's in SE Wisconsin, out in the boonies.

Dave, that's cool you have some paperwork on Tom's car.  I'll be seeing the guy that did the restoration sometime this spring, and I'll ask him if the paperwork you have went with the car when it was purchased by Tom .  Did your friend buy the car then, or did he take a pass?  I honestly don't know when Tom bought it - never asked that question.

No, I don't recall seeing that one around anywhere.  It wasn't sold new in MO, and was not in my immediate vicinity, that's for sure.  Which part of the state was it in?  Also, do you know what became of it?

Must have been a thing with Missouri Daytona's and retrofitting A/C - that makes the second one, and there were what - about 6 or 8 known to have had that done to them?

I had seen Tom's car on the list, and noticed that they did not have the colors listed at the time either.

There are things we can see in some Dealer Numbers that indicate what the car was initially used for.  All of the cars that went to a Car Show, Regional Offices, Executive Garage, etc. (for some Chrysler Corporate use) had a dealer number that began with 9, in this instance the number is 92852.  That's probably either a dummy number, or it is keyed to the event that the car is being sent to.  Either way, I do not think it represents an actual dealership.

The current Dealer Invoice series in the WW newsletters lists most of the cars used in "Sales Shows"  twice.  They are listed once with a regular Dealer's name, and again with a 9xxxx dealer number (which I think is more-or-less a dummy number).  Before the car Jim asked about was "reassigned" to go to the American Exhibition Hall in KC, it was assigned to May Avenue Dodge in OKC.  With that in mind, I wonder if 356520 went there after the Car/Sales Show in KC was done?

Yes, it was directly to the left of the Daytona.  It was a nice Tri-Power convertible that the owner couldn't make up his mind what particular shade of blue he liked.  I was at Mike's shop in October of '04, and the car hadn't been touched between October and January '05 for that reason.

And not only that, but the state totals would be affected.  Missouri would be down 1, and OK up one.

69_500

So was there a rash of Black Daytona's built on that day or what?

Were they like some other cars and built in batches of like colors? Anyone ever done a research like that? I've noticed some of the 500's seem to be like that. Where 3-4 in a row were either all HEMI's or all of the same color exterior wise. But no set pattern or anything like that.

3--Daytona

hemigeno-----nascarxx29---69-500--Hey guys thanks for all the info,,,,All I knew for certain was when I found 356520, it had been wrecked, totaled out,, patched up with tons of bondo, painted blue, repossessd,,with a Al, title.  I found the "barn" it was patched up in, but could not get any info, and was very forcefully asked to leave. When I am looking at 3 dogs, a man with a cigar in his mouth, a bulge in his back pocket, I do as I'm told!!  I tried to get somthing from Dept of Rev, from  Mo, as well as AL,, No,record.       Thanks  again.               3--daytona

In some cases Ive seen similar cars with close vins .As 3 daytonas and Paul K.Built like twins down to the color. If they did build a batch together on the line with number in order vins? .But if I car had a dent and pulled out of the numbered place in line. That theory wouldnt follow. Also 3 daytona I remember you car being Wingo Star or story was called Winged wonder in musclecar review in Oct 89 or so.And that you and your family restored that daytona yourself .Nice Work

Ah Jim, I can't see you backing down from somebody, you always seemed to be the type to speak your mind. I'm sure you did speak your mind, but probably left unwilingly.

Jim your R4 daytona is incredible. I think you said you restored it 10+ years ago? It still looks great. I'm hoping your X9 car comes out even nicer. It is the same painter as did the R4 car right? And if you guys are going to make it to Vegas, I just got word yesterday that I will be at that show again. So I'll look for ya if you decide to make the trip.

hemigeno

Jim,

You might try your search again, but this time try the DMV in Oklahoma.  That might explain why it didn't show up in your Missouri search - it might not have sold new here!!

I know I already shared with you the info I found from my Missouri search that gave several other Missouri-titled Daytonas & Chargers.  They were all listed in MO as XS cars as opposed to XX - every single one of them.  Your green car was on the list not too far above mine.

69_500

You mean when you searched for your Daytona they gave you search results of other VIN numbers as well Gene? Wouldn't include any 500's would it?

:icon_smile_big:

hemigeno

I didn't get a complete listing of the '69 Charger titles and registrations, only a partial list.  But the information does still exist, that's the good news.  I tried and tried to get info myself from MO-DMV, and got the usual "Sorry, we don't keep records back that far" reply.  I ended up talking with a PI who has friends in high (or low) places there at the DMV.  He got me a partial computer printout sorted by VIN that has several cars before and after mine.  The VIN's are XS cars, between 407138 and 419444.

If I can get the info for this range of VINs, I'm sure it could be generated for another range.  As with Missouri, it might take someone with "connections" to get access to the right information from other states.

69_500

Ah I see. Well I know that in Indiana they only keep information for the past 10 years. So no luck on me using the DMV here to try to sort out what cars my dad might have had or anything like that. And I don't know anyone here that works in the DMV.

nakita7

There's one in Central Alberta (or at least there was about 15 years ago). It's a black on black Hemi car. Had 6000 original miles on it. Still have a picture of it from a Mopar show.

69_500

I was just going through some old Hemmings Motor news yesterday and saw a X9 daytona that was for sale in 1989, it might be the same one Gene mentioned. It was listed as Black, with a black interior, and a red tail stripe. I"ll try to scan the add and post it.

hemigeno

From what Dave mentioned, the Tom A. car was once for sale in AL.  Is that what state the Hemmings advertisement is from?

My Dad has a '67 GTO Convertible, so i'm familiar with that hood shape.  but if its a tri-power then its a '66.  Only 4-barrels in '67.  Same hood though.....

Nope Gene isn't the one I'm thinking of, this car was for sale out of NY in December of 1988. $29,900 for it then, Black car, AT, red stripe.

I had to dig out a box of Hemmings to find it again, but its fun reading all of those adds now.

I can only think of 5 total Black Daytona's that I have seen in my lifetime. That I know were factory black cars. That is me personally. However I have always heard that the number was 9, heard a few say it was 11 total, but when I talked to people in the club it always seemed the number was 9.

:iagree:

As far as the stripe goes, there is paperwork that shows you could order a stripe-delete Daytona.

Quote
Special stripe will be added in conversion if desired, color of stripe, Red, White or Black, or "Omit Stripe" instruction must be provided by Dodge Plant Distribution to Modification Company.

I've seen pictures of no-stripe cars, but I could not tell from a picture alone if they were unrestored original cars or not.  I have not seen any in person, but that doesn't mean anything.  It was possible, so I suppose there are a few out there.  On those cars, the wing would be body color, correct?  Unless that was a Red or a Black car, they would have had to paint the wing a different color than normal.  R4 matched the "tomato red" stripe color, and X9 matched the black stripe.  The white stripe color didn't match W1 though, so they'd have had to get different white paint for a W1 wing on a no-stripe car.

Without pictures of the car when new, or an order form (or something similar) showing "Omit Stripe" instructions, it would be almost impossible to prove that a car originally had no stripe.  Hard to prove that it DID have a stripe (or a particular color of stripe for that matter).

69_500

Colors that aren't so common on Daytona's or at least of cars I've seen are these.

B3 blue, I've only seen 2.

B7 blue i've only seen 2.

Isn't there 1 999 paint code Daytona as well?

I have only seen 3 cars that are A4 silver as well.

I have heard of 9 cars being W1 white, although I have only seen 3. 2 with red interior, 1 with black.

Well for one I can think of 3 A4 silver cars off of the top of my head. So I can update that much of it for him. Bob Malcom owns a A4 silver Daytona, as well as Wayne Perkins, and then the lady on Moparstyle Kismygby, I forget her first name at the moment.

Yeah, that is who I was forgetting. Shouldn't be hard to remember a ladies name when she owns a Daytona, but I'm horrible with names much better with VIN numbers and faces than names.

Back in 1986,I was driving in Boston Mass, and I heard a car with very loud exhaust, like it had lost a muffler, and I saw the car come out of a street, about a block back from where I was,and it was a bronze Daytona, that some kid was beating the shit out of! It had crappy mis matched tires on it with steel wheels, and the right muffler was draging on the ground. It had a white tail stripe, and wing, and several spots of red oxide primer on it! I tried to catch up with the kid,but I couldn't because of the traffic. I could see the wing weaving through traffic! I have to wonder if the car survived, the way the guy was treating it!

Good story there Pete. I wonder if it did survive. I'd say it probably did, someone along the way probably purchased it and has been piecing together the right parts to fix it up some day. Or heck maybe even the young kid did this, and it has been sitting in a garage since then waiting to be repaired.

I remember a guy in 75-76 in Foxboro Mass having a daytona with aluminum slots on it
