OK so I finall got some pictures loaded up.  Can someone tell me what I am looking at here !! Thanks

This is what we removed when we installed the new MP electronic igniton kit. Is this an old aftermarket ecu or Oem????

Now this is still hooked up on the fire wall. I am sure that it is voltage regulator, but it doesn't look like anything I have seen in my research!! Do you recommend keeping this or getting something else??

Chryco Psycho

the second item is the old point style regulator for the alt , the first I have not seen before

Canadian1968

Ok so I obviously dont' have a points style ignition any more, but do I still need this regulator because of the alt. that I have?

Chryco Psycho

new replacement regulators are electronic so you can use the same type of system with a new reg or up grade to the later system with the two field terminals & the electronic reg used from 70 -89

Canadian1968

Well my problem is , while at Idle I am only charger 12.6V at the battery, If I am correct I shoul be getting more like 13.6 correct??  I was woundering if the voltage regulator is the problem or possibly the alt? OR both?

Chryco Psycho

Battery voltage is 13.2 so to charge you need more than that , 13.8-14.4 is normal , I would replace the reg first as it look original , or if you put a jumper from the battery + to the field terminal on the alt the voltage should go up to above 15v , this will test the alt , do no tleave it on long just long enough to confirm the alt is working

The Prestolite pic looks like an old transistorized ignition module.

The voltage regulator is incorrect for your year/model....It looks like an older C or Y-Body part. It will work with a single field alternator.

If you want original looking AND the electronic kind, which you should have if you've converted to electronic ignition:

a 68 would have a single field alt so that reg is correct , the new replacements are electronic not points , if you want to convert the whole system to the 70 up type you need to have a dual field alt or unground the second terminal on the alt you have , use the 70 reg & add a power wire from the blue wire at the ballast resistor to the field terminal on the alt , using the second field terminal to return to the reg as it will switch the ground circuit instead of the power circuit

Right now I just want something that will work with everything I have. So if I look up a replacement for the voltage regulator it will be electronic, but still compatible ?  I don't care about stock looking, this is not a restoration.

Are you getting the same reading at the battery when the engine is turning some RPMs (above 1,000 let's say)??

The reason I ask is because there may not be anything wrong with your charging system (if it's stock).  There were design issues in these cars when at idle... the stock alternators could not make enough power at idle to run the basics of the vehicle, never mind have anything left over to charge the battery.

Nacho RT74 has some excellent threads on this subject, along with suggested modifications and tips on dos and don'ts.  I'm sure you'll find them informative.  Just enter "alternators" in the site search engine in the Electrical section.   Here's one talking about your issue specifically:

Bring this topic back from the dead ! Actually the car is just out of storage now, so I can work on it again !!

So what is my best bet here. Should i just replace the old regulator with the new electronic style.  Or should I just go ahead and upgrade my alt. as well ????

What other upgrades/ changes have to be done if I choose to update the alt???

Thanks guys

Powermaster one wire alternator, prob the best investment I've made yet!

No , it's not. the regulator shown is for  C bodies and maybe Imperials. with the 60amp alt system

not used on a B-body

There are a few things to consider here:

1)  I can't tell by the write up or pix of the new alt that you want to get in the link, but if you're buying that regulator, the alt needs to be a dual wire.  Also, you need to make the wiring mods that Chryco Psycho mentioned earlier in this thread when upgrading to a 70s and later regulator.

2)  Regardless of whether you go one or two wire on the alt, if you're bumping alt output to 75 amps, ensure you upgrade your wiring to a heavier guage (ideally alt to ammeter, ammeter to battery) to accomodate the extra power (I used 8 guage for my 100 amp alt).  Stock wiring at best was only designed to handle 46 amps (highest alt output for a '68 - air cond cars).  If you don't, you risk overheating your wiring, which could lead to expensive repairs, or worst case scenario, a fire.

3)  You should also consider bypassing your ammeter.  The stock ones are rated at 40 amps and it's quite possible that it'll see more than that with the higher output alt (depending on the state of your battery and what you have on in the car at any given moment - headlights, brake lights, radio, wipers etc.).

I sense you're looking for a quick fix here, but alt, regulator, battery and wiring all have to be considered together when making changes to any of these components, especially if you are straying from stock/original.    :yesnod:
