car shows can be fun the way you look at them. fun to show and meet people. and if you win, thats cool. i like your attitude. i won a trophy once and a little girl whose parents were showing against me was upset. (she really wanted a trophy). so after the awards the wife took a pic of me with the trophy, then i walked over and gave it to her telling her that i think they thought we were a team and gave me the trophy for our team. she was happy and said yes we are a team and we can share the trophy. ive never seen the trophy again, but i have a nice pic.

Honestly, when I register for a show I specifically tell them "don't judge my car". Sometimes I have to argue with them! I'm only there to look around and it's unlikely I'll stay through the awards any way. I have no use for a trophy so let someone who wants it have it.

exactly what we have been doing the last few years as well....I pay my entry fee, park the car...and when someone wants to know what number it is for voting, I just tell them it's not being judged...so please vote for another car.

We don't go for the trophies, just the friends and people we have not seen in a while

I do and feel the same way. I always put 'display only' on the window card and never leave the judging sheets where they are supposed to be. Sometimes the show promoters get perplexed or peeved but I don't care. I look at it this way, I like supporting the shows and the entry fee is worth it for a good parking spot.

I gave all my old trophies to the Boys Scouts for their Pinewood Derby races.

To be honest, if I take the car to a show I never stay to the end. I go there soley to look at all the cars and give people a chance to look at mine...............then I'm off.
I don't need an award to make me appreciate what I have.

Its funny that this topic is about this subject as I was at a first time car show tonight for a NAPA auto parts store.  Turns out, best in show award was two tickets to the upcoming Pocono Speedway NASCAR race, 2 tickets, front row, and the prize was kept secret until the winner was announced.  I had no clue who the winner was but they said the car had 12 votes for it.  I think if there were 30 cars at the show it was a lot.  No other awards other than the best in show which was fine by me.  But after they called out the car number and not what kind of car it was, I went around looking to see what kind of car had one.  This teal colored 1968 Firebird 455 car with tacky pin striping that was pink and blue won.  The chrome was ok but the interior was ugh, blah!  And the rust that was bubbling up under the vinyl cover?!?!?!?!  Well, the race would have been nice to see as I have never done that before but at least I got to spend some great time with my 5 yr old daughter at the show and got to meet some great new people who I will probably see again next week at another show in my town.  I think the highlight of the evening was my daughter saying.... "Daddy, your car goes fast"  (I think I was doing maybe 40) and "you're charger is so cool" (yet she voted for another car at the show, which I was totally ok with)

Heheh well this is the way car shows will all go in the future.  Kids are raised to receive little league trophies whether they win or lose, and car shows will have to give these punks trophies for 'just showing up' too.    Granted, that means that in 20 years a 'Classic 92 Saturn' will get a trophy just like the next guy's 'Awesome 2002 Corolla' but trust me, it will happen.

Had one try this in person at a show, next time, I was prepared. Went to the local trophy shop and bought a couple of those little $5.00 Tophies. When One went off about how it is rigged and what not, I tried to hand him one saying sorry guy.

Shoulda seen the croud after that.

I keep a few in the trunk for this very reason now.

If I was running a show, I'd have trophy tucked in away in a box for "1st Place - Whiner", and I'd preset it upon such occasions. Collectively, we just need to embarrass these kooks enough so that they will go somewhere else.

There's a stock Magnum class?

Yes. You'll find at most Mopar shows nowadays, there are classes for the LX cars. This particular show had classes for stock and modified Magnums, Chargers, Challengers & 300s....all split up into their appropriate model classes. Some people love them (like me) just as much as we love our classic Mopars. I went drag racing with my Magnum last night and my best was a 14.43 @ 96.79mph. Not bad for a stock 5.7L Hemi.

I did competition pistol shooting for over 15 years and collected so many trophies. Guess what.........I've thrown them all out. They were nothing but dust collectors.
As you say, a bit of cash always comes in handy. Mostly we throw that away too but we do get something in return.

I think I got it figured out about the whole trophy thing...See, IMO, it's the same as on test and tune day at the local track as to winning a trophy.
When your car runs the time, people know it. People kinda treat you AND your ride a little differently after that for some reason. I remember when my Dart was not really known as far as a timeslip goes. So, Everybody and their brother on the local "Street scene" at the time knew I was all about some N..O...S...


I knew there was only one way to tune the car. Take it AWAY, FAR AWAY from the local tracks. WHY you ask? Well, let's see...
First pass of the trailer at Peidmont, the car turned 8.40's 8th mile. This is with a brand new at the time, 505 C.I. stroker, back in 1997...First around these parts, built with someone else's blown up 505 engine parts. Tears were welling up in my eyes as I just knew after all the talk around "the scene" about how "that little dart has just gotta fly", I couldn't tune it locally because everybody knows you screw on a Nitrous kit on anything and go from running 8.40's to high 6's....

Nevermind the fact that my best pal told me when I was going off about sh*tty timeslips, to "Go get a balogna burger and calm down"...I came back he had the fuel bowls off and a jet kit out. Told me he didn't know how it ran as good as it did with my "Sh*t tune up" in it.

Bottom line? "We" (he) tuned it to low 7's on the motor and a single pass at 6.88 Through the mufflers on N20. After that, the track official decided i didn't have enough safety equipment and told me not to come back until I did. I haven't been back either. It STILL doesn't have half that stuff.

Car guys can say that they don't NEED or go looking for trophies, but it kinda tells the rest that you/your car is kinda "Above" theirs if you actually DO win one.
Like it or not, it's a competition thing and when there's competition, there will be more competitive people involved.

I like to use my brother and I at the local "test and tune" as prime example of this.
He stated he runs his busted, broken down, 1967 Dart with it's shoulda been rebuilt 20 years ago, 318, four speed, and welded up 8 1/4" rear for what he referred to as "Fun only".....And I should run mine for once.

I decided to put him and his "fun only" to the test one night. He decides he's gonna pair off against my Dart. I can still hear the announcer squawking "Well here's one we don't see too often folks! Two Brothers in two Darts!!"
Long story short, the first two passes out the three we made that night I let him "go" on ahead and reeled him in like a catfish on the big end.

Third pass? He decides he's gonna leave on the second yellow and thought I couldn't catch him. I did. When I got the timeslip I saw the redlight and asked WTF?
His reply: "You weren't gonna get me out the hole and train length me that time!"

I replied: "But, but, it's all for "Fun" right?"....

In order for there to be a "First place", or "Best in show" there has to be losers. That's ok once in a while, but what I found at these local gigs is that the same damn, Ebay bought, high dollar, cars win every single time and that gets old QUICK....

For once, I'd like to see a show where the voting folks actually asked "Did YOU restore this car?" , "How much time and labor went into this?"
Instead of giving a trophy showing the poor bastid that put 5 years into a restoration that his car "Wasn't up to par" with that "high dollar, Ebay, Just bought it,  Armor all'd the tires and filled it up with fuel" car.


Lose once, and most can take it like a man...Lose constantly, and most will get tired of trying...
Maybe this chick and blinged out Magnum lost a BUNCH of shows and she thought she mighta had this one in the bag. Then Cody shows up and steals her thunder again? Not defending her here, just offering a maybe as to why she reacted like a spoiled kid.

I'd agree if all shows and all judging were the same. However, it's easy to go to a small show with a few cars and take a Best of Show trophy or at least first in your class. Do you feel good about it? I wouldn't. I know guys who buy obscure cars and go to shows that have a class they fit in - but aren't likely to have enough cars for - just so they can win. I entered a show a couple years ago with the Mach 1 and Charger R/T. There was a "Mopar" class and a "Mustang" class but only three Mustangs showed up. I was guaranteed to win a trophy by default but I didn't have my car judged.  My friend's daughters race SCCA and most of the time they are the only women in their classes (they aren't always in the same one). They compare their times (like drag racing) because winning first place in every race doesn't mean much. Who wants to win when there's no competition? At least some people do. I believe these are the same people who make excuses for not winning when there is competition. Again, judging can be biased. At least one local show gives about 60% of their awards to club members (who also happen to be the judges). Carlisle has "participant judging" so fewer politics - but it is easier to stack the ballot box if you belong to a large club or know a lot of people.

They do this to get more cars to show up. In this case it backfired. If you say you're only giving out three trophies then anyone with a borderline car won't bother to bring it.

I have been to close to a hundred cars shows.  Most of the time everyone gets a trophy, so it's a "who cares" kind of thing to me.
