Is there a way to tell a Hemi 4-speed while it's still in the car? Also, would the body VIN be stamped on the machined pad? The car is a 1968.

Thanks in advance.  :2thumbs:

Probably.  ;)  This thread will answer some of your questions. http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?topic=78754.0. Is the entire drivetrain still together? Is the input shaft of the transmission visible? Count the splines (should be 18). Other than that I think from the outside the 18 and 23 spline 4-speed boxes look identical.

Thanks for the quick response. I am aware of the 18/23 spline difference. In this case it's a running car & I am just curious as to whether there are any special exterior markings particular to the 18 spline unit. If the clutch cover is removed, is it possible to see the splined input shaft?

Depending on when it was made, the partial VIN should be stamped on the case (machined pad on passenger side). My 68 Charger R/T 440 was built in December and is stamped. There is an additional number underneath this starting with "PP" which will help determine the original application. I don't think you can see the splines but I forget. I believe the throwout bearing is larger though so perhaps you can measure it?

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The "PP" designator should be followed by "833" and a 4-digit date code (10,000 day calendar), which could help you to see if the assembly date was in line with the cars scheduled production date should the partial vin not be stamped. And remember that the VIN and fender tag S.O. are different on a '68.  ;)

With the bellhousing dust cover removed, it's easy to see the splines on the input shaft.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
