I rebuild my column and replaced the gear box, now the column is 4 1/2" from the gear box. I checked the old gearbox against the new one and they were identical.

what did I do wrong?

73 charger w/power steering.

Thanks

A383Wing

the inner shaft in the engine compartment that connects to the steering box has probably slid up inside the outer column shaft

That may be the case, although Im not sure on a 3rd gen. If so, isnt that non-repairable?

nothing to repair...it's a collapsible column

Do I have to take the column apart to pull the steering column back out?

A383Wing

no....just pull the center section back down from the engine compartment

Once its collapsed I believe the plastic rivets are sheared off allowing the bottom sleeve to turn independently?

no...the plastic rivets are there just to stop the noise rattle in the columns....they are a rectangle shape or a "D" shape..it cannot turn inside itself

I tried pulling it out and it would not budge.

Chryco Psycho

try clamping vice grips on it & tap it out with a hammer

Where are the shear pins on the column?

Chryco Psycho

1/2 way up inside the column

randy73

I tried banging it out, but it will not budge.

Where can I get a new column?

Patronus

I hear ya bro. I went through the same thing. When I finally got another column (from a member here in the for sale section) I ripped apart the old one. The rivets are connected by rectangular pieces of plastic as well. One of those fell out and got stuck in between the two sleeves, locking it up. You'll find one, look around. Be careful of ebay, some dudes bait and switch.. Dont ask me how I know.
