Did all Superbirds come with 14 x 7 rallies?  My build sheet has 14 x 7 on it but I have 15 x 7 rallies at home.  Trying to decide what to do.  Any opinions?

FJ5WING

Im not sure about 14" ralleys but mine is coded for and has the 15" ralleys. Im not sure Ive seen 14" ralleys on a Bird. Ive seen the 14" road wheels though.
wingless now, but still around.

Big Bird

yes 14" ralleys were availiable on the Birds. Mine has them on build sheet ( W21 ) with F70x14 WSW tires ( T86 )

There were no 14x7 rallye wheels,only 14x5.5 and 14x6.

I would leave the 15" wheels on the car.   They just look nicer and fill the wheel opening better.

Mine also came with 14" Rallyes, though I would rather have 15's the 14's still look pretty good. Now on a Daytona they would not look as good due to the larger rear quarter wheel opening. Not to mention they weren't available on them.

A sold new in my area B5 superbird six pack car came with 14X7s originally. He bought the car and changed them to the 15s.The actual dealer ad with stock#2749 which is also on the cars paperwork.Ad described just rallyes.Later 15 aftermarket rims tires for the back kept 14s in front for a while

Redbird

So many cars of the era came with 14" wheels, a special note to GM here. I'd guess Doug has a ballpark breakdown on the percentage of cars getting 14" and 15" wheels and a percentage of cars with 14" Rallyes to 15" Rallyes. At one time Galen Grovier wrote an article saying 14" Rallyes were the most common wheel on a Superbird. I don't know if that is true or a typo.

Something of interest is the 5,000 mile Tor-Red unrestored Superbird on e-bay right now. I'm thinking this was the car that Doug or his dad ran an article on when it had 12 miles on it? One picture on the listing has a picture of a wheel trim ring backside with a sticker on it. Could it be that they all came that way off the factory floor?

I actually wish there was more pictures on the listing. It is quite a time capsule.

In about 2006 there was another unrestored Superbird listed on e-bay. As I recall listed by Musclecarfinders. I'm thinking it sold for $ 275,000. One of my cars was one digit off in serial number from that car. Even at the height my car wasn't worth something even close to that. But my car was identically equipped except mine had a tach from the factory. The pictures of that car, and pictures of another Superbird that was 3 serial numbers off in the other direction from my same car, and again almost identically equipped, paint a picture for me on a piece of the ordering process.  When you look at some of the paperwork in the Winged Warrior newsletter from the '70's - which is 3rd hand knowledge at best. A general concept to take away is that many of the cars were done in short batches of similarly equipped cars.

I like that the 5000 mile car no one added the tach along the way.

As a practical matter, 15" Rallyes are the concensus choice on a Superbird. They look good and there are reasonable tire choices. A lot of cars came that way, but a lot didn't, you'd never know that by the current representations.

Arnie Cunningham

My car came with 14" rallyes as did Al Wald's.  I am certain of this because the wheels on the car when I bought it are a matched set and date correct.  Also, there are red blobs of paint on the inside of the rear rims that perfectly match the missing spots of red paint on the original brake drums.  They apparently installed the wheels while the drums were still wet or the paint was soft.

My bad, I just seen the 14'" tires on there and assumed they were 14 x 7.  I agree with the 15" looking better on there and filling out the wheel well better.  I will most likely go with them.  Thanks for all your replies.
