Hi everyone! New to the forum due to recently buying a 1972 charger with a 400ci. While trying to figure out some of the wiring concerns I noticed 2 wires that were cut. Under further investigation they went to what used to be where the solenoid vacuum valve was. My question is, should I be concerned that this part is no longer there? What effect will it have on the drivability of the car by not being there? Also I noticed that there are different wiring diagrams for if it is a california car or not. Is there anyway to tell if its a california car by not looking at what components are on the car (since im assuming theyd have been removed in the past anyways)? Maybe the VIN? I know thats quite a few questions to ask, but trying to knock out 2 birds with one stone  :icon_smile_big: . Thanks!

Welcome to the board.

Is the emissions sticker on the drivers side inner fender panel still intact? If so, green is Calif and blue is Federal. What vacuum valve are you referring to?
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The valve that has a dark blue wire and a black wire and is located near the passenger side of the carburetor. It is a connection between the vacuum advance and the carb. And ill see if i can find that sticker

chargedcharger

There is no visible sticker on the inner part of the fender. Any other ideas?

Don't all CA cars have the silenced air cleaner?  Not that it couldn't have been removed in the last 40 years but I'm not sure how else to recognize it.  Got a build sheet?
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Look for an "N97" on the fender tag, second line down from the top.

What does a silenced air cleaner look like? And there is no fender tag. Also Im still lost about how my car would run without the solenoid vacuum valve.

I believe the solenoid vacuum valve was part of the NOX system, it was placed inline between the carb ported-vacuum source and the distributor vacuum advance; at a certain road speed and temperature it shut off the vacuum advance. With the valve taken out of the system the vacuum advance would work full time so it should run better.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

If the vacuum advance is running full time, wouldnt it idle poorly?

chargedcharger

Still lost on this one guys. Is there anywhere that sells a replacement?

There's a difference between manifold vacuum that is full time and ported vacuum that increases with throttle...ported vacuum is what the distributor is hooked to.

When I said "the vacuum advance would work full time" I meant that it would work as it normally would if the valve wasn't there to shut it off.
