So I was changing oil in my 68 today and decided to look up the capacity in my old Chilton.
318, book say's 5 qts w/filter (usually I've always filled until the oil was between the lines on the dipstick) well after 4 qts. the oil was just short of the middle of the lines.
I add the 5th qt. and its at the U in FULL, I'm guessing I have a dipstick from some other engine and basically I've been running around a quart low. Should I expect any damage done from this?
Also I've had a lifter tick when cold and after flooring it but goes away fairly quick. I wonder if that was the problem?

What filter do you use , that alone will vary the capacity ?
I assume you have a windage tray in the engine , as long as the oil is below the windage tray the oil will not get foamed up , air int he oil is a bad thing !!
