What do you guys do for insurance?

Just saw the smashed up GL in another thread and it got me to thinking.

My '68 is the first classic car I've owned, and while it's not worth a bunch now, when it's done it'll most likely be worth much more than the book value.   I have a buddy who's dad has a mint '68 R/T, and he uses Hagerty.   His '53 Chevy Truck project is also through Hagerty, and he says they have an 'ongoing restore' type option where you can insure it for it's crap value now and they add 10% per quarter or month or something over the time frame of the project up to its true projected value.

For those who have it, what's your experience been like?   Are their rates decent?   Are there other options that offer good coverage for these cars?

I'm getting quotes now. Classic car insurance is very affordable. I got a quote from american collectors... 30K agreed value, 0 deductible comprehensive, 0 deductible collision, covers towing and covers $500 in spare parts. Quoted me $258/year.

Hagerty has insured a couple cars of mine. Our car is insured for $55k agreed upon value, flatbed towing yadayada
for $398 per year. Kinda pricey but that's NorCal for you. It's also a resto'd fully doc'd NM R/T. I'll be looking to reduce the premium next year but I've bee happy with Hagerty so far. :shruggy:

Jaak that's really good.  I doubt my car will get over 25k because I'm building a 'nice driver' so that's reassuring.

Well it's agreed value; so as long as you don't declare it to be a $50K car they won't appraise it or question your claim.  You will have to provide pictures, of the car in its home garage, at least I had to when I first hired Hagerty to cover the Charger.

I use Grundy. Very happy with them. I just lowered the agreed value on the 01 Corvette and raised it on the Charger. Great company to deal with. Had a small claim last year. They handled it quickly.

Any mileage limitations on the above mentioned policies?  I don't see myself going over a few K per year, but it will be a driver... so need to know

Grundy has no milage limits but do require you to have a DD. They don't allow your classisc to be primary use vehicle.

Shouldn't be a problem, I drive about 50-60K miles per year for my job so the 68 will be staying at home while I continue to try and break the mileage record for an F150.    When I get off the road in a couple of years my DD will likely be one of those 4-door Wrangler X models with some mods.   Chalk another vehicle off my bucket list :)

Also, anyone had a large claim?   What was the experience like?

I used to use State Farm for my Dakota, and had a minor fender bender back in 2000 or so.   After 3 calls to my agent with no return, she finally answers and I tell her what happened, she literally said 'Why are you calling me for?   You should talk to the other driver's insurance company and see what you can get from them' and hangs up.   State Farm got dropped like a rock and I went over to Geico.  When I totalled the Dakota about 5 years back they were not only courteous, but quick, fair on the price, and no questions were asked or any nitpicking and I got my check within a week with a smile on the adjuster's face and a THANKS for my business.   Yes, I bought a Ferd with the money but based on that experience with them I've been with Geico ever since with no thoughts of switching.

Rates are one thing, but good service is SOOO hard to find these days from any company, even ones selling tacos.   With the entitled 'tweener generation manning the front more and more it seems it's impossible to get anyone to give you courteous and fair service, which should be a given in my opinion.   It's worth paying a little more to not have to worry about a bureacratic nightmare on the backend.

When I got my quote, like Paul G. stated, no mileage limitations, but it cannot be your daily driver. They also stated when I am not driving it, it has to be stored in a locked garage, cannot leave it in your driveway.

I didn't think about Grundy. I haven't purchased any yet....I'm going to their site right now for a quote!

This has been covered on here quite a bit in the past, try a simple search.  :yesnod:

I have American Collector's on mine, they have been very good over the years, & I've had to put in two claims with them. One of them was BIG.

You know I just did search and you're right, there's a ton of posts on it.   I broke my own rule about searching before asking.  Thanks for the input anyway :)

My Charger is now insured, through American Collectors.

While I was one of the members who sung the praises of Hagerty Insurance, I'm not singing now! I just received my 2012 renewal documents.....they want $426 this year!!!!!! This is up from $398 this past year which I thought was steep at the time. What the hell! I've had Hagerty for several years and never filed a claim until a few months ago and its was small, only $1700.
My Hagerty terms are $55k agreed upon value-fresh resto 2009/2010, driven 2500 miles per year or less, no road side service because I have AAA and always garaged.

I'll send some pix to America Collectors and Grundy insurance to see what they offer but I think Hagerty is giving me the shaft with no reach around!

Opinions?

$28 more? Meh.

Feel lucky you're not paying my rate.

bull

Mine's been insured through Hagerty since I bought it. From the get-go I've sent them dozens of photos of all stages of the restoration (including pics of it completely dismantled) and during all that time we've bumped the value up over and over again. I think it's insured for $40k right now and the engine ran only once since I bought it. There's no percentage/year value increase limit that I'm aware of. If there is one I've never exceded it or I'm sure they would have informed me. It's an agreed-to value and they ask for photos so as long as you don't ask for some crazy amount they'll accomodate you. I just tried to be fair on the value and apparently they "agreed-to" my value assessments.

You filed a $1,700 claim and your premium went up by $28/year? OMG! In just 60 years and 9 months they'll have recouped that entire amount! I'd dump 'em too. :D

Seriously though, it can't hurt to shop around. Maybe you'll find they're not that bad, or maybe you'll find that you can save yourself some money. Don't stay married to any insurance company.

I've shot all the required pix they will ask for so I'll see what American Collector and Grudys want..........might not be much better but it's worth the quote requests.  :shruggy:

I have Haggerty with about 10K of parts coverage for each car. Yes, I have that much extra crap. Typically, if parts aren't on a car they are not covered, so you may want to consider that option.

I hear you but thankfully our car is done. On another note, I spent about 18 months 72-73 in Brunswick at the old naval air station. Now a federal law enforcement training center.
Yeah, I know.......I was sorry to be stationed there too.  :smilielol:
