Just bought a DVD recorder/player.  My question is, will CD-RWs work in this or do I need DVD-RW.  Is there a differance?

How do you mean "work"? A decent DVD player will read most all of them but you can probably only record on DVD-R or RW. Be sure to check the format since there's a bit of a difference between brands.

Also, the easiest thing to do is read the stuff that came with your new toy. It will be very specific about what you can use.

I did read all the stuff.  There was no mention of whether I could use CD-RW in it.  I guess. it's back to the store and get some DVDr-RWs.
Thanks for the info.

I would think it would PLAY CD-RW but not burn on them. It should be able to burn on DVD-R's and DVD-RW and play those too, especially if its pretty new model

So do you really know anything about the different formats?

Troy, Thanks for that link.  It made my head hurt!  The manual, that came with my machine, explained all of that.  Though, a little simpler.  It's set up to use either DVD+ or DVD-.  During the set up, you choose which format you want to use.  I'd already concluded that the (+) format was the best.
Thanks again for the info.  Now, I need an Tylenol!

I would like to add that you should be able to burn and playback both CD's and DVD with your player.  My Sony can burn both the CD format and DVD format.
You will not be able to burn a DVD to a CD though.  So if you are archiving MP3's and MPEG's and such, burn them to the cheaper CD.  If you are trying to burn a movie project, then DVD.

The DVD burner should be able to burn on a CD as was stated above. You can store video files on a CD but they are at much lower quality, and are called VCD.

As D.E.L. Productions we burn out DVD's on DVD-R only due to that is the older format, and if someone has an old DVD player and we sell them a brand new DVD that is DVD+R they won't be able to view it. Almost all new DVD players will play both formats, however older ones only recognize the DVD-R's. In another year we are going to make the switch to DVD+R for quality reasons. We figure that by that time, 70% of households will have a DVD player that will recognize both formats. For now we will stick with the DVD-R, out of a necessity to meet the demands of most potential buyers.
