Police spokes person said it was a self inflicted gun shot wound, to his chest...

By all accounts, a great and giving guy. He was very well respected when he was with the Pats as well.

One thing that bugs me is the need to exaggerate things when something like this happens.

ESPN continually referred to him as the great sports start in San Diego history?

Now, I'm not from the area but does Tony Gwynn, ring a bell?

BTW - I didn't know this until recently, but apparently my sister in law dated him briefly some time in the late 80's/early 90's (Mrs. Ponch is originally from Oceanside, where he was from). Six degrees...

It is believed that Seau was having a lot of problems associated with CTE, a degenerative brain disease brought on by repeated blows to the head (as you might expect in the NFL). His family is going to donate his brain for the purpose of scientific study and they believe this is why he shot himself in the chest rather than the head.

Very sad to hear about this.  We were very happy to have him join the Pats post retirement.  Definitely a larger than life character.  Perhaps he just decided it was better to burn out than fade away.  He is probably drinking shots with Elvis and James Dean as I type.  However it was probably that and facing a life with a brain injury.  If you haven't read the GQ article that follows it is a real page turner and stomach turner.  It makes you realize how little the NFL was doing, however I don't kid myself that the players were not aware of it.  What frightens me is that for every NFL head injury story and suicide there must be dozens of ex-college players who don't make the news.  I hate to say it but they should likely ban down linemen.  Those poor guys bang heads on every play.  It is a big reason why there is less contact during practices allowed now.  The weight explosion in football is a big problem too, not just for head injuries.  These guys are having heart attacks and dying too (see NY times article).
