anyone ever try welding their gears together since its an open diff? alot of my buddies have welded diffs until they could offered a good lsd setup for their cars and i was wondering is it possible to do the same in a old school muscle car

HPP

Sure its possible, but why? On a street car is is dangerous, noisy, and potentially damaging to you, your car, and others around you.

Oh yeah, it's been done a lot.  Modern car guys learned that trick from the musclecar & 4x4 crowds in the first place.  (Ever heard of a "Lincoln locker"?  Lincoln is a brand of welder.)

It bears saying that the trick stands to cause more trouble in a RWD car though.  Unlike a FWD car, on a RWD car the locked rear end will throw the tail out when it interferes on turns.  On a FWD car it just produces understeer which is generally a bit less dangerous.

If you are eventually changing the rear end...go for it.   I have welded the spider gears in one vehicle, more or less turns it into a spool.  Yes it may not last forever, and it ruins it in a way....however it is the cheapest way to go.
MANY of my cheap friends have welded the rear ends and it worked for some time....obviously it is not the proper "correct" way to go though....

This is a bad idea. It is a hack shortcut way and has NO place in a street car. Turning in the rain or snow almost guarantees that you will spin out. No big deal if you have ZERO traffic around, since only YOUR life is in danger. A welded diff stresses axle shafts as well. SKIP this idea.

Have I done it? Sure....Have I seen it done? Sure....Have I seen pieces come through the floorboard? Sure....

I don't think it guarantees you'll spin out - I have never spun out yet and been running a welded diff now for 2-3 years. I autox and drift the car and know of many that do the same - is it a cheap LSD? sure. will it ruin your axles faster? sure. but if your like me you just keep a few extras on hand...
