Edelbrock 1806 Thunder Series AVS  VS.  Edelbrock 1411 - Edelbrock Performer ??

650 cfm vs. 750 cfm?

Read a lot of threads regarding this and have narrowed it down to the two up top. Now.....is AVS that beneficial? I was told 750 is better with a 383 and mild cam...but then I've had several say the 650 w/ AVS is the best way to go. I'll be ordering one of the two in a few hours so hopefully I can get some opinions and answers regarding which would be better on slightly modified daily:

-383 w/ mild cam
-Torker 383 Intake Manifold
-TTI Headers (1 3/4)
-2.5" TTI exhaust w/ x-pipe and flowmasters

Just curious which you guys prefer?

650 is more than plenty, I have a 750 on a 440 and I rarely use its potential.

I have an edelbrock performer and I'm going to remove it.  It's very reliable but it runs way rich at idle and lean at wot and it gets that typical eddy bog as well.  Apparently you need a tune up kit to get this thing dialed in right and I think they could've done a better job at the initial build.

Neither lol

I'd go with a holley 700 or 750 DP 4150 carb. Super simple to tune for bog free performance.

Find out what your engine makes for vacuum and go a couple numbers lower on the power valve. Start with stock jets and squirters and go from there. Squirters and jets can be changed out in 5 minutes

A good used one can be had for $200ish.

Thanks for the opinions. I had a holly on my '68 Impala SS and just had nothing but problems. Not saying its a bad carb as a lot of people use them. But I started using Edlebrocks and had better luck.

My main concern was if the 650cfm was going to be enough for a 383 w/ mild cam and headers.

thanks!

Holley Carbs are like project vehicles...Not many people can build 'em and make 'em perform.

Just picked up the July 2012 Mopar Muscle mag, The last three issuses, have covered the build of a close to stock 383, 10.0:1 , 906's and a 500 in lift cam, pretty much the same as mine except they are running a bigger came than me. First pull on the dyno with the 650cfm,was around 335 hp, kinda surprized me, thought it would be higher. Anyway, some tuning brought it up to 356.9. Next,750cfm mechanical, hp;387.6  Next carb,780cfm vacume secondary hit 380 hp, slightly less than the 750cfm mechanical. Next 850cfm mechanical  seemed to make the most power, and brought the torque number to it.s highest level, 388.2 hp and 393.2 lbs of torque. They then bolted on a 1050, the whole point of this exercize was , when are you overcarburated??? I run a 780 vacume secondary, had a Thermoquad 650 on earlier, felt like the car was a bit of a dog, bolted on the 780 and the car instantly woke up, after reading the article, I would like to see how an 850 works on my car.

I would not use a 650cfm

750 or more!!!

TQ 650?  Didn't they only make them in 850 and 1000 cfm?

I ran a 650 holley pn 4777 for a couple years, ran fine. Swapped for a 750 holley pn 4779 and it woke the car up a lot.  An 850 would potentially make more power but you will sacrifice low end driveability.

My advice would be if you want a streetable car, run the 750. I'm turn key and go with it.
If you are building a weekend track queen then tune an 850

oldkimmer

...........I'd go with the Holley 750 vacc secondary carb..........kim.......

My main concern was if the 650cfm was going to be enough for a 383 w/ mild cam and headers.

I was running a Edelbrock 600 on my 318/392 stroker and liked it. Very snappy crisp throttle but seemed like it was lacking when getting over 5000 rpm's.
So I got a 750 Performer and it cured that problem. Note: I'm still running the stock 318 heads which are choking my engine, I think once I replace the heads I'll be more than happy with the 750.

I'd go with a proform street series 650 carb  :2thumbs:

The AVS is far better than the AFB series but I have to agree
My choice is Neither , use a Proform as Ron suggests

So from what I gather, it doesn't hurt to go bigger. 650cfm will work fine...but 750 works even better?

BIGBLCK11

I also have a mild build 383: 906 heads, 60302 Lunati cam(Thanks Ron!), Eddy Performer RPM, Doug's 1 3/4 headers, 2 1/2 exhaust.  The car is running much better with a Holley 650 DP, mech. secondaries.  I was running the Eddy 1411 - 750 carb before.  I think it will run even better with a little more tuning.
