Recommendations for a new aluminium manifold for my 72 with ram air hood

Hi lads

Need your advise again please.

I want to get rid of my old cast iron manifold and change it to an aluminium manifold without any hot gas cross over.  The motor is stock ( the car actually has the high perforamance motor from what I believe was standard in the 71 R/T's.  She snuck through in 72 when she was built).

What would you recommend and while I'm at it want to put on a new carbie with a manual choke.  Presently it has an Edelbrock carbie that it came with when I bought it but want to start a fresh.  I prefer Holleys, only because I'm familiar with working on them, but will be guided by you lads.

The beast has a factory ram air hood so I will need to have a manifold and carbie that gives me the standard height.

Car is a manual without A/C

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.  :2thumbs:

By using a 1215 Felpro intake manifold it will block the heat crossover
the stock intake was available as a Mopar M1 dual plane intake , no performance gain but less weight & good hood clearance . The next choice would be the CH4B intake better performance & sits low .
My  choice would be the Holley Street dom intake , sits low & makes wicked power .
I would use a New Proform carb , extremely tunable with the response of EFI

DR440

Thanks

The Holley Street Dom Intake, When I read up on it, in one part it says it's a single plane but in another part says it's a dual plane runner layout???? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-300-14/

Any views on what CFM for the carbie

The Street Dom is a low rise single plane with great street manners . When tested it beat up on virtually all other intakes with average power #s
I assume you have a 440 , the TQ is 850 CFM & my rule of thumb is 2x the CI so 850 is what I would recommend , everyone else on the site will tell you to go smaller though , never figured out why  :brickwall:

DR440

Sorry, yep she's a 440.

Would you happen to have a link so I can look at the thermo quad you speak of please?

The TQ is the factory carb with a plastic body , they have not been made since 84 , parts are very difficult to find for them & tuning them is difficult as the performance kits are hard to get are are generally incomplete .

Chryco Psycho

Yeah that is what I would recommend , the Proforms are awsome carbs

DR440

Thanks for that.

Now I got to see if I can get that stuff down here in Australia.  If I can't I assume Summit is the place to shop there?

If I read all the specs right that manifold you speak of is taller and I will have issues of fitting it under the air grabber, http://www.holley.com/300-14.asp or have i got it wrong.... again? LOL!!

Chryco Psycho

there is not much room for height change with the air grabber so yeah the Street Dom is probably enough higher it will not fit , I don't have a CH4B to measure , but it may not sit low enough either , you may have to use the iron intake you have & just block the crossover port with the Fel Pro gasket , I would port match the intake a bit as well . the carb will be the same height though

DR440

Starting to come to that conclusion.  Greatly appreciate the feedback

Ive got a CH4B, its a good manifold and you can find em on ebay..heres the only on on there atm

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Edelbrock-CH4B-Mopar-440-intake-manifold-/230784584472?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bbd54b18&vxp=mtr

They vary in price, that ones a bit on the high side but mainly because its got a chrysler P/N on it so it being a dealer item (chrysler offered em at one point) the price generally goes up than an unstamped CH4B

CH4B and a proform carb will have you set.

Heres some eye candy for ya

Id go with the same carb i have, 750 proform is good for a 440 (too big and youll loose throttle response) and you really dont need to street one with the choke, even on cold days you learn to feather the throttle a bit on cold start up and shell idle just fine after a bit, youll also gain some CFM without the choke and choke horn on her.

I thought all CH4B all had the Chry PN.  All the ones I've seen had them.

It is about .4" taller than the factory cast iron manifold.  I've been told by others that it won't fit.  I believe someone is offering/modifying the aircleaner base to drop the air cleaner back down to the correct height.

Oh be still my beating heart.  Drooollll!

What would say would be a fair price for a CH4B?

That would be an issue.  I'd have to get another filter base done as it's a bit hard for me to send my one all the way back there to be done.

It's looking more and more like I'm going to have to stick with my cast iron unit.

I so need to do a trip to the states with a shopping list and catch up with some of the Mopar fraternity

Bsb only ones sold thru chrysler will have the p/n the one i have does not.

I have both a cast iron (71) and the ch4b i will measure the height dofference for.you.

Id say the one on ebay is a tad on the high side but not by much considering its an oe chrysler unit and looks very clean.

Appreciate that FLG.

Out of curiosity, what was the CFM of the original carbies on these beasties?

Don't measure it fro me, I know what it is.

Ahh huh.  I'd be really interested in the actual numbers if you care to run a ruler over the heights for me please

Many Thanks

Just to clarify, the CH4B is 4" tall or are you saying that there is 0.4" difference?  Sorry for being a bit thick, I have to double check everything when one is so far away

I really appreciate your time and effort on this for me lads  :2thumbs:
Time, The Predator That Stalks Us All

FLG

Ah even better.

I believe theres just a .4 difference

Carb CFM varied, but id put them at the 750-800 cfm mark

A 750 proform in reality flows more like 780 or so

Chryco Psycho

in that picture the side rails of the CH4B are higher then the stock intattke so it slould be less than .4" difference

You are mistaken, possibly due to the angle of the picture, or you looking at it correctly.  I spent considerable time lining up the manifolds so that the tops of the intake port windows lined up.
