Has this happen to you?

It pains me to ask this question as it just happen to me not long ago to my 68 Charger.  I just had my alternator rebuilt and put it back in the car and check to make sure the charging was working correctly by looking at the gauge.  All looked good, so time for a test drive.  Went do to the local Starbucks and got a cup.  Took the long way home and about half way home I looked down at my temp gauge and it was at 260 Degrees.  Looked up again to see if the stop light that I was sitting at had changed and it hand not so I was time to shut the car down.  Two nice guys jumped out of their cars and helped my push the car out of traffic. I popped the hood and found the alternator belt had slipped off and the water pump was not moving water anymore.  Lucky I was only a few blocks from my house so I got my tools and ran back to the car. The car was cooled down for the most part by the time it got back and put the belt back on and it started right up.  

Now what?  It seems to be running fine but not if there is any damage and not sure what to check for?  It does not seem to be leaking anything.. No smoke coming out of the tailpipe after start up. Can I just assume all is fine?

I would say you don't have anything to worry about. If the radiator was blowing fluid and you continued to run it I would say there was a chance you might have hurt it.

I blew a fuse on my electric fans and watched the temp gauge go through the roof and the radiator blew out about a gallon of water, after replacing the fuse and adding some water I was good to go with no issues since since.

Its also a good idea to keep a spare belt. Cheep insurance and dosen't cost much.


Note: If you damaged the motor you would probably warped the heads and would be seeing white smoke comming out your tail pipes and/or radiator fluid in your oil.

Thanks for the feed back.  I have Indy heads and not sure if those are more likely to warp rather than stock heads?  Oil seems to be clean and no white smoke either.  I am going to get it out this week for the first time since this happen and hope to not end up on the back of a tow truck!

Alternator belt has been add to the pile of spare parts in the truck

Mine likes to throw the belt above 6,000 rpm. I stay below that at all costs, but just in case I carry a spare belt

i agree, your probably fine. the engine cooled down on its own. no whipped oil on the dip stick and no smoke at the tail pipe.

These engines can take an enormous amount of heat.................you'll be fine.

Thank you for all your input!  Took the car out yesterday and it was 90+ degrees here in Northern California.  The car ran great!  I think all is fine!

Yeah you'll be fine.  Just do me a favor and change where you say you "pooped the hood ' to you popped the hood please.

I did wonder at the time whether you meant you pooped on the hood or under it!
