Vandals burn prized antique cars (video)

EDMONTON - Don Keltie wishes vandals had only stolen his prized 1956 Studebaker and not set it on fire.

"At least you'd still have the thought in the back of your mind that you could find it again," Keltie, 63, said as he stood beside the charred remains of the car.

The farmer found the burnt-out wreck of his restored Studebaker on Monday, a few meters away from the barn where he kept some of the antique cars he collects.

Police believe vandals broke into the locked barn, on a farm just south of Spruce Grove, sometime on April 14 or April 15. The suspects then started the Studebaker and drove it into a nearby patch of mud. The car got stuck and the vandals lit it on fire.

The suspects also pushed a 1926 Ford Model T car out of the barn. They smashed its windows, broke an axle and dented its radiator. The vandals then closed the sliding barn door behind them. Police found the lock in a nearby field.

"This car is 85 years old. It survived ... I don't know what it's been through in its life, but now it has to put up with this," Keltie said of the black Model T, which he bought this winter. The broken glass of the windshield has a slight yellow tint to it. Keltie said it's the original glass.

Keltie, a farmer, has been collecting restored antique cars for several years. He said he has no idea who may have vandalized the cars. It's "mind-boggling" why anyone would want to destroy such "historically wonderful" vehicles, he said. "Whoever it is is one sick puppy."

Keltie said he will repair the Model T, which sustained much less damage that the Studebaker.

His first car was a Studebaker, and he fell in love with the 1956 refurbished model he found about three years ago, calling it "his pride and joy."

The fire burned off most of the car's teal and white paint and its interior was reduced to ashes. The flames destroyed the seats, leaving only the metal coiled springs. The vanity plate on the front of the car reads "56STUDE" in bright red letters.

"There's no hope for it ... you'll never find another one like it anywhere," Keltie said of the Studebaker.

More than $20,000 worth of damage was done to the two cars. Keltie has offered a $5,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the responsible people. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP at 780-962-222 or 780-968-7267. Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

It is a shame someone has raised someone to be such a low life such as this. It is a shame they did not set them selfs on fire doing it.

I agree.

If life seems so senseless to these morons that they need to do this kind of thing then maybe they should just do away with themselves and save us all the aggravation of their stupidity.
If not then hopefully someone will get the satisfaction of playing hangman.

Stupid, stupid morons!

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

I wonder too, as the article only states 'more than' $20,000 worth of damage was done to both cars.  Don't know about his insurance, but I would think the Stude is a total loss and he should have at least that much insurance on it.

Reason I say that, is because the more the economy goes into the tank, the more I think we are gonna see this.
Not saying this didn't go down like it claims it did, but.....

I mean, just suppose you have a rare, collectable car and are trying to sell it for what you think is a fair, but profitable price. Now, you've tried and tried to sell it, but no takers right? But! You have it insured for well over it's value..More than enough to make a few bucks on if vandalized/stolen....

Afterall, you obviously are tired of it, need the money, whatever, so you simply "Sell it" to the insurance company and profit handsomely.

I know folks in the insurance industry and it's not all that uncommon and does follow the overall trends of the economy.  Typically it's an uptick in structure (home) fires.

While plausible, on the first pass I really didn't consider Cooter's fraud comment.  But, when you think about it, you restore these cars your whole life with the idea they will escalate in price and fund your golden years and then bang they aren't worth what you have in it.

Wow,,,,,, then some random Vandals break into your barn, move a T (to get to that much hated Studebaker?), and steal and burn a Studebaker?  Just for kicks?   Lets not forget they trash the T for good measure.  What's up with that?

Yes, the more you think about it, the more suspicious this one gets.  If I had to bet a kidney on this, I say, fraud.

Indygenerallee

Well another thing that is weird is when they were talking to him there were other cars off to the side that looked untouched??? You would think whoever "did it" would have beat those cars up to? And I know a guy that lit a newer Ford F-350 diesel on fire because he could not afford the payments, had one of his buddies use a lighter on the wiring harness under the dash while they were driving and it just happened to occur out in a remote stretch of I-70!!! Needless to say after that I lost a bunch of respect for him, He never got caught and he was bragging to a bunch of people about it, total dumbass.  :eek2:
