Pretty soon I will be looking for new Subs for the Charger . Currently I have two 15'' Visionik (sp?) Subs .  What brand would you reccomend ? Right now I'm looking at some Volfenhag speakers.     http://cgi.ebay.com/2-2000-WATT-VOLFENHAG-12-Car-Subwoofers-NEW-ZX-4712DVX_W0QQitemZ5860159885QQcategoryZ18803QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The Problem is that the Subs i have now take up way too much space.  The box is so big that I can hardly fit my tool box in along with a couple other things. I will be looking for 12'' Sub woofer for the charger to create a little bit more room.    The main reason why I want to get  to this is because I want to use VP fuel in my car on the track.  Unfortunately the track is an hour drive away so I don't want want to waste all of that good fuel getting their (especially a 440 car). I wont be able to fit a fuel cell with the big speakers , which is why I am downsizing.

theres lots of good quality subs out there. If you can afford some Kicker subs go for it. Pioneer IMPP subs are quite good and not that expensive too. There's also "free air" subs that you do not have to run box with them so you can basically mount them anywhere without enclosures

I ran a pair of Bazooka Tubes with a 100 watt, 2 channel amp in my pick up, & thought they were great for the price. They were the smallest Bazookas, like 6 inch, because it was a regular cab compact truck. There are amplified versions in different sizes, but I'm not sure what the largest one is. Crutchfield shows a 10 inch, but maybe they make a 12. I don't have my truck anymore, but I may put the pair of tubes in my Scamp behind the seat in the raised area above the rear axle. I won't lose any space that way.

The best ones won't rattle my windows as they go by my house! I swear to God some day I am going to throw a rock at one of those cars! Hopefully the good ones will destroy the ear drums of the jerks that find it necessary to blast their music into my personal space. Rant over.... :flame:

HAHA!   You old fart!  Back in the 80's my buddy had a stereo shop and it was Pyle subs and PPI amps.

mtx are pretty good, all the guys i know around here run them-i would stay with a enclosed speaker, free air use a lot more power to make the same  sound, and its not as clean

chrisII

ive never seen / heard an mtx speaker that i thought sounded good, they are loud and if all you want to do is rattle stuff and pi$$ off telvis and myself (im sure many others also) they will do the job. if you want to enjoy good quality sound then skip all the car speakers and go directly to what good pro sound companys use in theatres and live music PA systems. i wont spend my money on a speaker not made by Electro Voice (EV). obviously they have several different lines for different uses, even the lower quality speakers that they sell have terrific sound. of corse the old saying garbage in = garbage out still applys and i would question if many car systems are good enough to do a good EV justice.
times change also..i remember when MTX and Pyle were good names , i had like 3 pairs of pyle tweeters in my van in the early 90s and i thought they were the schiznet. now when i research there stuff i see alot of cheap junk trying to live off of the name they made 20 years ago...not the best long term buis strategy but they are probly makin good profit margins now and that may be all they care about.

Yeah sometimes I crank it up, but I try to be respectful as I can. Like when I come to a Light/ Stop sign I always turn down the volume really low.  I also turn it down really low when I come home at 3:00 am , that way I only wake every one up with my exhaust  :D  .   My dad had  3x   10" MTX Subs in his old 4Runner which sounded pretty good ,though I never really figured them to be one of the best.

MTX Subwoofers are ok, I personally like Rockford Fosgate. The both of them also make descent speakers. As a HU I would use Alpine.

Arthur

PS I should add that this is all very personal, sure if something's really crappy than everybody will tell you they don't like it. But as soon as the products are good then the opinions are just personal taste. Subwoofers are not that good to compare as well since alot of the sound can be affected by how the casing was build. If someone would not give them enough air or too much air that would make the subwoofer perform not to it's maximum. So it's just personal taste and how you think they look.

As far as subs go JL Audio is top dog IMO. Ive heard a single JL 10" sub blow 2x 12" MTX subs out of the water in clarity and volume. Rockford Fosgate, Kicker and Alpine make great equipment too. MTX isn't bad but they're definately not top of the line. Like 68-70 Charger said, a lot of this is personal taste...

It's interesting to me that over the years personal taste over appearance of a speaker, or a car stereo in general, has changed. The furthest thing from my mind was what it looked like, since all I wanted to do was keep it out of sight & hidden from thieves. The less obvious, the better it is. I still feel that way & have all intentions of hiding things when I update a few things.

I don't want neon lit woofers, aerodynamic appearing enclosures, or strobes that blink in time with the music, all that's important to me is sound quality & hiding it. Someone used to make a fake A/M radio faceplate that would lay over the deck in your dash & look like a cheap, factory radio that nobody wanted. I still have it & will probably try to make another one if I can't find one for sale.

The loud rattling I hear doesn't bother me when someone drives past thumping their stereo. What sounds annoying to me, is when they have the volume so high all you can hear is vast amounts of distortion. It's like nails on a blackboard, & just has to be much worse inside the car unless they're deaf from the level & can't hear a damn thing at all.

As for showing off the equipment, I have a friend who spent 2 grand on a car full, & lost it all except for a few wires one night when he went bowling.  ::)

I'm not sure if your looking for SPL or sound quality, I can't help on SPL, but in my opinion, JL Audio W0 subs are the best compromise available (weight, sound quality, efficiency, price, and required enclosure volume). The sad thing is that JL just discontinued the W0 series, since it is a single voice coil, stamped frame driver, but there are plenty still available, and at discount prices. Also, the higher JL lines are still very good drivers, but at the cost of weight, price, and eficiency.

It's Unfortunate that the need for "Bling" is killing off all the better products/lines in speakers and amps, but that's what drives the world now. On the plus side, I just bought four W0 10's at a local dealer for $70.00 each (for any possible future projects), so there are still some incredible deals out there.

Now that I have a pretty good Idea what brands to look at I have to figure out Size of the Subs.  Like stated earlier  I am downsizing my speakers for clearance. I've got a box with 2  15" Visionik Subs  which takes up most of the trunk besides room for a small tool box.  I Need to put a fuel cell ( an 8-12 gal.)  in my trunk so I'm going to need a little bit of room. I'm wondering should I got with 10" or 12" Subs?

When it comes to speakers you should listen to them yourself. It may not be as critcal with a sub, since the sounds are all low frequency, but I'd still want to hear it before opening my wallet. The worst thing you can do is just get a speaker without hearing it first. One person's choice may be their favorite sound, but it'll be horrible to another. I had listened to a pair of expensive speakers by "Definitive" & wasn't impressed at all. It had good reviews in a stereo magazine & the salesman liked them, but my ears were happier with a less expensive pair of Infinitys.

As stated its all a matter of taste.

I tried a bunch of stuff in my charger and ended up with an Audiobaun 10" dual Coil sub (as in one speaker, but 2 voice coils) and an Audiobaun  amp.

I tired a Sony Amp in the car and it sucked, the AudioBaun flat out destroys it. And I tired MTX and Sony and something else in my car for subs and the Audiobaun Sub killed them.

And as A note I was after Tight bass for Old school rock tunes that could also do a little boom boom if the mood caught me.

The hardest part is trying to keep the damn car from rattling.

I also listed to about 20 or so 6 x9 's  and ended up with a set of Alpines.  They where about $130 and beat out some $200 - $300 sets I heard.

Sound is so subjective and personal taste, look and listen to everything you can find.  You might fall in love with something that 99% of the population would tell you is total crap.

JL Audio for subs, MB Quartz for speakers, Alpine for amplifiers, and Alpine head unit or Eclipse.  Those are the brands the I prefer and have in my vehicle.
