Anyone running aero rims?  I am thinking about putting 15x10's on the rear and 15x7's on the front of my 1968 Charger.

I thought they were not DOT rated for highway, I think those wheels centers are thinner (lighter weight) and can be susceptable to cracking around lug holes after alot of fatigue.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Got em on my Challenger, 15x8 w 4.5" backspace and 26x10x15 S/Rs on the front. 15x10 with 5" backspace with 26x12x15 S/Rs on the back.

No, they are not d.o.t. approved. I used them back in my racing days and I never broke one. Bent them, yes, darn near folded them over on themselves more than once, but never broke one. Yes, they can be mucho lighter than stock equivilents. As a race wheel, they require you to use 45* lug nuts. I'm usng 1" hex units. If you use stock style 60* lugs than you run the risk of lug hole damage.

Bassett sells DOT approved racing wheels.

Yeah, I am torn between the Bassett's and the Aero's.  I like the Aero's because of the yellow line which will match the color of my car; although, the Bassett redline trim would look good, as well.  I have pretty much decided to go with 15x7's on the front with 245/60/15 tires.  Just in a dilema about what to put on the rear - either 15x10's or 15x8's.  Either way, I will be running 275/60/15 tires on the rear.  I think using 15x10's with 5" backspacing would take the bulging look out of the tires; whereas, the 15x8's push the tire sidewalls out a bit away from the rim.  If I go with the Bassett's, I would go with the 15x7's backspacing 3.625" on the front and 15x8's backspacing 4.5" on the rear.  I know a lot of guys like the 295/50/15 tires on the rear, but they look a little too low profile for me.  I know the Bassett's require lug centric balancing - hopefully, I can find someone to do that. I don't plan to use them for racing, just like the appearance of them on the car.
HPP - thanks for your input and pic.
Any opinions on my plan would be appreciated.

Well, a 275/60 has a 9" tread width. Rule of thumb is +/-1", so 8" is the narrow end of the rule and 10" is the wide end of the rule. At the price these sell for, you could always try one size on one side the other on the other side and resell the one you don't want if you don't like the look.

When I was drag racing, I tended towards the narrow end of the spectrum to create sidewall bulge to absorb the launch. When I ran oval tracks I tended towards the wider end of the spectrum to stabilize the sidewall more.

What size tires and rims are you planning to use?

HPP-thanks for the feedback.

Still undecided, would like to stuff the largest tires possible on it! Have not got that far into the project yet but I believe that's the direction I am going!

they have been used and abused by the drifting community and they take a beating and i have yet to bend/crack one yet - and i run a 15x9 with a 3.5" BS!

and the best part is their cheap!

I am 99.9% sure that is what I am going to go with, also!  I am concerned that the yellow line on the Aero Rims will clash with the stock SS1 yellow paint on the car - would be okay if they were the same shade; I just don't want a brighter yellow on the rims that will clash with the car.  I think the redline of the Bassett's will look good.  I had redline walls on my tires back in the day on my yellow 1972 Monte Carlo. I thought they looked pretty good.

Didn't you have that rendering done up of our car with the bassetts? Vinyl top? 68 right? Thought it looked great with the red too. I like the shape of the D on the bassetts better IMHO.

Yup - that was our car.  My son was working on it down in Las Vegas - we had the vinyl top put on down there - the guy did an excellent job.  My son was transferred up to Salt Lake City with his work, so we went down to MATS last weekend and trailered it back.  Just need to get the wheels and tires and do a few other detailing/finishing up things to it for the crusing season this summer.  Now that it is up here, I can devote some time to finishing it up.

Did you go with the lightweight race wheels all the way around or the 15x7 DOT approved and 15x10 race wheels?

Right now I am pretty sure I will be going with BF Goodrich T/A's - raised white lettering.  The price is right at Tire Rack -
Front - 245/60/15 - $121.00 each
Rear - 275/60/15 - $119.00 each
Funny thing that the 275's are cheaper than the 245's.
Can't find a raised yellow lettering except Hoosier - but I need some tread on them for road driving rather than slicks.
I know alot of guys don't like the T/A's  - but I have them on my 1969 Charger and they work great; not planning to do a lot of highway driving with the 1968 - mostly shows and cruises.

:iagree: Last I looked they sell a DOT approved D-window wheel that looks the same as the race versions.

Here's some pics of them on Chargers: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,52194.0.html

I would get the DOT's, but they don't have them in 15x10's - just 15x7 and 15x8.  I won't be using them much for long highway use - just shows and cruising.

15x10's might seem like overkill for a 275/60/15 tire; but from what I have seen, they seem to take the sidewall bulge out that you get on a 15x8 rim and make the sidewall stand a little taller.

Yea, it's preference. I've got 295s on 15x8s and they look fine to me.
