The meaning of the term "muscle car"

My wife reckons she's figured out where the term "muscle car" comes from and why.....................it was pretty warm today and as we were cruising along she decided to roll down her window. As she doesn't do this often,  all the fittings a still fairly new and tight so she said to me ............geez, you sure need some muscle to roll this window down, now I know why they call them "muscle cars"!!

I'm thinking the term "muscle car" started in the 70's.
