E Body barn find

OK guys looking for a little help here. We found a 1970 Challenger R/T in a barn tody (picture below) The VIN says it is an R/T and we are going tomorrow morning to inspect it closely. I know nothing about E Bodies-are the VIN's in the same place as B Bodies-radiator yoke and trunk? Do the R/T's all have 440's? What about gauges and rear end-are they DANA's or 8 3/4? It is an automatic. Any other guidance appreciated

70 RT did not come with a small block.  Later you could get a 340 in the RT I think 71 but in 70 RT was big block.  I am not 100% sure but I believe you could get a 383, 440, or a hemi in the RT trim.  I have owned big block E bodies and personaly think they were built to be powered by the 340 handeling qise

JS is an R/T , VIN is on the rad wall , left top of the cowl , not on the truck rail .
383 mag N code  is the base engine , 440 , 440+6 & 426 optional
Dana only with 440 or 426 4 spd , auto had 8 3/4 unless optioned in .
R/T had Ralley gauges , 4 pods , tach should be 8 K , 150 speedo , oil temp water & gas in one pod & clock in 4th pod N85 code
Could have 22 or 26 " rad

Well no news on the barn find-he cancelled our in depth look at the care last night-major storms in the area, so we are hoping to get up there tonight or early this week. Will post pics and info when we get some more stuff.

    Taped to the back side / top of the glove box insert.
    Under the front bucket seats in the springs
    Inside the bucket seat backs
    Under the rear seat bottom
    In the rear seat back.
    Under the package tray (speaker shelf)
    Under the carpet

Yea, a 70.  I went to the challenger form but it sucked... This Charger Forum is MUCH better!!!     Don't own any chargers currently, but have previously owned a 68, two 71s, two 72s, and a 73 Charger before, if that gives me any street cred...    Always wanted a 69, but who doesnt.

  I am a sucker for the rubber bumper!  And FJ5!    I had an Ivy Green Metallic rubber bumper 70 for 5 years, loved that car... sold it back in April of last year because I had to...       I will have another one day...    Next time around, it will be an FJ5 rubber bumper car!  Beautiful Car!!!

Congrats!  You'll find out that Mother Mopar didn't do such a great build quality on E bodies.

I hide them and make something up after my wife finds out.  It seems the auto teacher here at school buys alot of Mopars that end up on my property.  Strange thing for a Chevy guy to do?

That green 'Cuda is beautiful, but this car is a Challenger. Just picked it up-very rough but very restorable. Original 70 R/T with 440 automatic. FE5 Rallye Red. No build sheet anywhere-the car is in boxes and came out of a bad place. We now have it on a lift in our shop. It has the original engine and rear end but literally nothing else-tranny is gone, interior in pieces, body work done in Goober's garage on top of existing rust. On the bright side we got it cheap, legal and have an empty canvas to work with. Dropped the engine block moving it and blew out a knee so the car will be more painful than expected! Front end is also completely gone as are brakes, but I do have a K-member. Interior-missing 70%.

I would appreciate suggestions how to build it.

Option 1: Since it is in so many pieces would you go back and try to make it original-I am assuming the engine can be rebuilt-block has been exposed to the air for 25 years, but looks bore-able. But with everything else gone it will never actually be original.

Option 2: Build it period correct-440, as close to original as possible, or

Option 3: Go with the AlterKtion front end, a cheaper modern 5.7L hemi kit and rebuild from there?

Here you go guys-I am offering you the chance to build your Challenger-it is a clean slate frame and rough body. So let's vote.

I would build it close as original since it is a true R/T 440 car.

Here is an update. We have all the crap out of the car. It's engine is a numbers matching 440 but I won't get it magnafluxed for 3 weeks. Rust is very bad including frame rails. I'm not sure if it is repairable but I am bringing body man in 3 weeks to tell me. Since it is a 440 r/t I have decided to go with option 2 if repairable

Just watched Barrett-Jackson this week.  They brought two super birds in, one was taken back to orginal, the other, somewhat modified grand touring.  The orginal brought over $250,000 and the other barely got $125,000.  Big difference and they were both beautifully done.  Oh yeah, both of these cars were orginal hemi's.
