Anyone ever heard of this method to remove rust?  :shruggy:

Someone told me that it involves using baking soda and it somehow eats away at the rust.

Any ideas or info would be great.

Look up "Soda Blasting". It's very gentle and washes away with water - so little or no chance of warpage and no sand falling out of your car 6 years after it's finished. On the other hand, you probably need to "neutralize" the car afterwards to get paint to stick. As with any blasting process, they can only clean the parts they can see/reach. Something like acid dipping will remove rust and other debris from inside body cavities - but then how do you coat them again (unless you e-coat the car too)?

I have considered soda blasting because there's are mobile blasters in my area. It saves me the hassle of hauling the cars to a shop across town and I can get a package discount for multiple cars.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Soda Blasting...  I just had my Charger soda blasted...   before and after pics are amazing...  I am SOOO pleased with the results.  As Troy said however you need to neutralize the soda.  I plan to use 180 grit sand paper on the entire car, top, inside & outside and all nooks and crannys that were blasted with the soda.  This is what Hot1Daytona recommends (who is actually one of my classmates from High School).  I trust his recommendation.  I now have a very clear view of what 'rust' issues I need to tackle.  I HIGHLY recommend soda blasting!

Thanks for the info guys.

72Charger-SE, I just read you resto thread the other day and it motivated me to do a lot of the work myself. I am still trying to figure what will be the most cost effective way to get all of the rust out/off of the car. I keep hearing different blasting methods (soda, media, sand), I just wanted to see up you guys here had to say. Thanks again. I have decided to buy a wire brush I can hook up to my power drill and a can of primer/sealer. I'll start on the front passenger floor and see how it works. If you look at my thread, I have a nice hole in the floor so my hope is to get rid of the rust, take it down to the bare metal and seal the metal. Trail and error, we'll see what happens....... :popcrn:

Dredilski,

My boys assisted with the interior tear down and such.  We used the wire brushes to get to the bare metal.  Hind sight being 20/20 I wish I would have 'primed' it as I went.  Currently the floor boards have some surface rust from being exposed to moisture a few months back.  So, I plan to use some POR-15 and clean it all up as well as seal it.  I have to replace the driver's side floor board as it is too far gone to save.  I have the floorboard and just haven't had the 'confidence' in my skills to cut the old one out and weld/glue the new one in.  The rest of the floor, including the trunk just needs some 'small holes' repaired.  I am considering purchasing the POR-15 Trunk Repair Kit that I was reading about.  I believe it will work for my application.  As far as wire brushing... just be prepared with primer and such and from my experience you will be further ahead in the long run.

Have Fun...  Take Your Time...  Do it RIGHT the First Time...   that is what I am trying to focus on.

Tonight after work (if it is not raining) I am heading to the Mopar Graveyard that a lady at our Church has on her property.  I am hoping to find a trunk floor section that is 'what I need' as well as a body paned that I can 'cut up' for patches.  We'll see what I can find...

Take Care & GOD Bless!
