If you are on a budget & "just" doing the engine compartment, might I suggest a single stage paint in this situation.

Want to do it really cheap? Go down to Home Depot & get a quart of Rustoleum semi-gloss black in a can, thin it a little with paint thinner, & have at it. About $20 bucks.
From what I understand John Deere's "Blitz Black" is similar, found at most tractor supply stores. Might be a little more expensive. These paints don't have the best UV protection, however it's underhood & will not be exposed much to sunlight.

Or, if you want to do it a little better, Eastwood has some Rat Rod black reasonably priced that comes with the necessary hardener & reducer. Most of what they sell is re-labelled name brand stuff. Check out their website. Around $100 or so?  :scratchchin:

If you want higher quality still, look into SEM's Hot Rod Black & DuPont also offers a similar single stage flat/semi-gloss black. Go down to your local auto body supply store & speak to one of their reps.  :yesnod:

For ultimate durability (& expense), then base/clear. If this is your first time with a spray gun, then this is not the way to practice. Unless, you have a high budget & are willing to do it twice.

Doing a small area such as an engine compartment might be a better candidate for single stage, especially if you are unsure what you're going to do with the outside of the car at this point.
Good luck!  :2thumbs:
