Next weekend I am going to look at a 1968 Charger that the owner says the engine (383) is original. I am fairly clear as to how determine if a 69 has the original engine. How do you determine if a 68 is #'s matching?

The verification items he has are:

1. VIN Plate - (which is an H code)
2. Fender Tag
3. Mostly readable build sheet
4. and of course, the engine.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I remember correctly, the VIN should be stamped on the passenger side of the engine block just above the oil pan.  The trans should also have the VIN on it as well.

'68 is a flaky year for numbers, the VIN might or might not be stamped in the block/trans; if it is it will most likely be on the back of the block below the oil pressure sender,  adjacent to the trans.

The fender tag won't contain the VIN but the VON on the tag should match the body stampings on the core support and trunk rail.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the help. I assume VON is the order number?

Thanks Dan.

I must have missed it when I tried the search.
