Tranny: 518 or a 727 from Gear Vendors?

Hi guys, I have 3,91 rear in my 8 3/4. Which means 3000rm @ 55mph.

Has someone around some experience from Gear Vendors overdrive trannys?

Cheers from Sweden!

Several members have the gv unit, if you do a search on youtube you'll find two clips (at least) of a 68 with a gv unit and it's nice to hear that extra shift.

You can also install a 518 with some modifications which may or may not save you a few pennies.

For the time being you can always swap the rear end gears.  I went from 3.55 to 2.96 just so I could cruise, the high rpm was driving me mad.

I don't know what they charge for those in Sweden but here you pay around $50 for the center section with gears, as long as they are open gears, not sure grips of course.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

To be clear, the Gear Vendors piece is just an overdrive that you attach to your existing transmission (in this case a 727). Don't expect a complete transmission if you buy one - even though the price may make it seem like you're getting more. ;) Several members have done the conversion (do a search). The transmission tunnel requires modification (via big hammer), the trans cross member needs modified, and the drive shaft needs shortened. You'll also have to wire in some switches to kick in the overdrive. This unit can handle a lot of power (the same design is used behind big diesel trucks).

The A518 is Chrysler's modernized 727 with factory overdrive (attached in a very similar way to the GV). Newer versions are electronically controlled which are a lot harder to retrofit into an old car. Older versions probably require a rebuild - but are essentially the same up front as the 727 and can handle approximately the same power. The A518 also only ever came behind small blocks (318/360) so they absolutely will not bolt to a big block in stock configuration. You can modify the case with a JW Ultrabell (for added expense of course) to install one behind a 383/440.

Neither will be inexpensive. A gear change is a lot cheaper - but maybe not as fun on the street.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

having BB the best way would be GV ( someday I will be on that )
