Guess where I live?

And they (California Legislators and Governor of a Party I Won't Name Since This Is Not About The "P" Word :icon_smile_dissapprove: ) want to raise our gas taxes again.

And it is specifically because we drivers are driving less and getting better fuel mileage. Less consumption means less taxes, so they (you know who I mean) say the gas taxes have to be raised. And the highways still suck in this state.

1US Gal = 3.79L

So 1 Gal of 96 Premium at our 3rd World price is $8.63
and 1 Gal of Diesel is $5.95

How bout those apples, the excise is about 27%   :flame:

**************************************
Excerpt from the local Automobile Assn website

When you last bought petrol, 59.129 cents per litre was collected by the government as fuel excise (excluding GST). Motorists are charged GST on the petrol excise, which amounts to a tax on a tax. The AA has called for the GST to be removed - a move that would reduce prices by 7.7 cents per litre and help relieve the financial burden on New Zealanders.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fuel excise
The fuel excise portion includes:

48.524 cents - National Land Transport Fund
9.90 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account
0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax
0.045 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy
In addition, GST is collected on the overall price of fuel including excise. The GST on excise amounts to a 7.7 cents per litre "tax on taxes".

There are no taxes on diesel other than GST. Instead, diesel vehicles pay Road User Charges. All fuels also pay an Emissions Trading Scheme charge (approximately 3 cents per litre).

+  Road User charges at $4.65 for a 3 ton vehicle per 100km ( minimum purchase 1000km )

It is now government policy for all of the petrol excise tax motorists pay to be directed to the National Land Transport Fund for investment back into New Zealand's road and transport system. The AA lobbied hard on behalf of motorists for many years to have all the taxes devoted to road building and maintenance, road safety education and enforcement, and subsidies for public transport.

Previously, about 19 cents per litre of the tax motorists paid on petrol was diverted by the government to non-road and transport related projects

I feel bad for everyone who has it worse on prices than me. My rant is not on the price, it's the tax.

The very same people, and their elected officials, who tell (often demand) you to drive less then piss and moan that consumption of fuel is down, and work to raise the taxes further.

It's supposed to be about maintaining the highways, but California continues to have the worst roads. This is an epic failure of government, with more taxation coming.

My head is going to explode. :flame:

I drive across the border at Needles CA into NV/AZ every once in awhile and I always wonder how they are able to sell ANY fuel in Needles considering the prices at the pumps a few miles away.

"The biggest difference is", You guys are talking about states that the roads are covered with snow, even at sea level for months at a time & are subject to way more abuse, we have much better weather most of the time {the Sunshine State or Golden State} & we only have a small percentage of our roads in Calif. that are snow covered for a long period of time {mostly all in the higher elevations}, we do have some traffic down in the valley & big cities though, in our case here in Calif. it's just piss poor bad management by the powers to be & govt. oversite, using the funds from gas taxes elsewere...
