Read this today:

Suleman told NBC News that for the past two months, she has received $2,000 a month in food assistance from a program in California that gives help to large families making less than $119,000 a year in order to sustain her family of 14 children. Suleman had six children before giving birth to octuplets in 2009 through in-vitro fertilization.

This isnt so much a critique of the Octomom, but on our social services system. How the hell did someone come to the conclusion that people making up to $119k a year can get $24k a year in food stamps ? Insanity !

That's California - where a mobile home can cost $400k and the government loves to spend other people's money. Not to mention the tax breaks, health care benefits, and everything else that comes from popping out kids. In many paces - not just California - it makes more financial sense for a woman with a couple kids to stay at home and live off the state.

The government can't give anyone anything that they didn't first take from someone else. It just costs a lot more to give it back because the massive clogged administration of redistributing money has to be paid for as well.

At what point does the public realize that being on assistance serves as a DISincentive to provide for yourself?
If you get a monthly 'gubmint" check without working for it, many people will take it, especially if it amounts to a similar amount of money they'd get by working. It takes a person with a sense of pride and self esteem to work a job that pays the same as welfare. I really hope that the day never comes where there are more freeloaders than people that work for a living.

It's worse than that.  

A lot of people can't make as much money working as they would make sitting at home doing nothing and accepting various forms of govt support.  And the system won't let them get both, they have to choose one or the other.  They have to choose between doing nothing and barely even supporting themselves or working and getting not enough to live on.

When I was living in Europe and the bodyshop was in a bad spot they had to lay off a few of us for two months.  Our boss put us on wellfare and to my surprise it was almost the same as my wages.  For a split second I wondered why I would go back to work as I was guaranteed to receive the same amount for 24 months.  WTH?

Why on earth you want more kids if you can't support them in any way?Depend on the state so you can have more kids and she is single as well!These kids gonna cost way more as they get bigger and older,school,clothes,food whatever!Hell even one kid is expensive but 14,my God!

I had a girlfriend from East-Germany and she said at school every morning they had to take anti baby pills until they were 18!Now i know it's extrem but they "forced"them to be educated and not be a single mom that the system has to support!

I'm not saying that this is the right way to do but seeing teenage moms these days got me thinking it might be a better way!

In England underage girls from rundown estates see no way out but to have a kid and the government will get them a counsel flat!Their parents done it so do they and most likely their kids will do the same!

Hmmm will that work for other guys with the one night stands that end up lasting 18 yrs cuz there was an accident? At this time there are more people (percentage wise) on government assistant than any other time in our history. I think it was 33%.

Welfare scum is everywhere, even here in WA state. They sit home, watch cable, live off of social services. Part of my paycheck goes to this trash every pay period.

Pride is what a lot of these people lack of!Why would they work if they can have almost the same money?Then why not steal or sell drugs and get more money then with work?The government's fault to pay them that much money,isn't it?Make them get off their ass and if they can't prove they have been looking for work stop the support money!I'm sure they can work for charities or helping cleaning the streets parks!

It's the same way with unemployment. People won't go look for a job as long as the current administration continues to keep pushing these high benefits to the freeloaders. I'm not saying the next administration won't do the same thing but now that the precedence has been set all the moochers are going to cry if they don't get it. Hell they are drawing 90% of their wages, there is no incentive to go look for a job.

I think after the first 6 months is up, the next extension the benefits should drop 15% per month until they are gone and that's it.  I've never been out of a job more than a few days short of a couple years that I took off intentionally but I wasn't on unemployment or any damn foodstamps.

Hell whatever happened to feeling like a man-a solid, self reliant, tax-paying and contributing member of society.  I guess I'm just an old fart but I can't feel like I can look someone in the eye unless I have the minimum criteria: 1. job 2. car 3. my own roof over my head.  I don't expect as much of women because, well, they're women and I don't expect them to do s**t.  But I know a lot of guys on unemployment and it escapes me how they've been leeching off of the system this long and they haven't put a 12 gauge to their head for lack of pride and self respect.  I just don't get it...

So, who's gonna support lower income housing?  Better public transport?  Cheap preventative healthcare?  


This stuff is the other half of the story that needs to be fixed if we are going to feasibly kick millions of people off welfare.  The USA has some of the highest costs of basic living in the world.  A portion of the money spend on handouts would go a long way towards making low-income life more survivable.
