Choppin' up a new 69 AMD fender!?

Hey guy's I have been thinking about something and was gonna run it by all you I figured maybe one of you guy's have done it before. I bought a set of AMD fenders for my 69 Charger when I was going to do a GL well now that I am building a Daytona clone (just got the Daytona nose, wing and other assorted pieces in today) I have been trying to find decent 70 fenders and they are far and few between and good ones running $600-1000 each I have a passenger side one coming and it will need some rust repair in the dogleg area, and I am still trying to find a driver side 70 fender, well I was thinking why don't I just section in the front 7-8" inches of a original 70 fender onto the new AMD fenders?? I am pretty sure the fenders from 69 to 70 are identical to each other except the leading edge, sidemarker, the bottom of the front section (which I have to do away with anyway for my Daytona valance) Think I might try it!!!!!  :icon_smile_big:
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Mike DC

Yeah, the idea occurred to me a few years ago.  I'm surprised people haven't been doing it already.

Indygenerallee

Yeah, I have never seen one done but I think it would be much easier than beating out a dented rusted original 70 piece!

Patronus

I had thought the '70 fenders to be much rounder than the 8-9's..  :Twocents:
'73 Cuda 340 5spd RMS
'69 Charger 383 "Luci"
'08 CRF 450r

Indygenerallee

CDR, All the parts look good so far, I am going to post pics tomorrow over in the Aero section on my thread, Im not using the Z brackets  they supplied I am going to use the 4 bolt method to bolt it to the fenders like Dane does, Patronus I went out tonight and looked and I think the 70 fender is more square on the front side the 68-69 has the rounded in top I placed the Daytona valance under the 69 front fenders and they are at least 6" short on the bottom where it wraps up to the bumper indent, I think they are the exact same fenders as the 68-69 except the portion directly in front of wheelwell, Once I get the passenger side fender in I will take more measurements.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Vainglory, Esq.

The '70 fenders are bowed out more, aren't they?

Indygenerallee

 I think they have the same amount as a 69? These 69 AMD fenders have a pretty good curve to em' but I have never had 70 fender in my hands (or arms I should say) so I don't really know I can't see Dodge Changing the body curve that much for a re-styled front bumper but if the floorpans, firewall, etc. are different than a 69 I will just have to see really does not matter much to me as the Daytona fenders were kind of a hybrid and neither 70 or 69 and my main concern is getting that flat spot to mate that nosecone to!!!  :2thumbs:

bill440rt

It's not just the leading edge on '70 fenders that are different. The whole front inner structure is also different. The headlamp mounts & front inner structure are part of the fender. Then the valance issue that Indy mentioned.

Also, '70 fenders are actually WIDER along the top than '68/'69 fenders.  :yesnod:

Indygenerallee

how much wider? I held the Daytona nosecone up to the front of the car with the 69 AMD fenders on it and it lined up on both side on the outside? The top was of course different but mainly in the shape where it curves down and around on the front leading edge.
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Mike DC

With all the variation & misalignment among the Daytona nosecones & repros, you are probably best to just get all the pieces in front of you at once (including the car) and fabricate it all to fit as best you can.

I never really whipped out the tape measure to get an actual measurement, but I did have my cars parked side by side & the '70 fenders are noticeably wider. I'd say at least an inch if not more.
Might explain the possible extra room needed for the fender scoops, too.

I sat the Daytona fender scoops on the AMD fenders and they look and fit perfect! I had read (believe here on the forum) that the R&D for the Daytona was used on a 1968 Charger (Buddy Baker had bought it) and that the 68 fenders were modified. I measured the width of my 69 AMD fenders at the very leading edge looking down from the inside (engine bay side) to the outside "curve" was 9 inches, anybody grab a tape and measure a 70? I think in all actuallity since I have a 70 hood coming I will just modify these 69 fenders as the car will be built with a more "restomod"/"Nascar" feel.

Ghoste

Just speculating here, but I wouldn't put too much thought into the 68 part of it.  What I mean is that any development work they did, I would think that things like the fender scoops were hand formed one off's.  Look at the wing and nose on the test mule car or the Reeker car with no fender scoops.  I would be surprised if prototype scoops were identical to production ones I guess.
Like I said though, just speculating.

Really? Just wait till you try and weld a section onto the front of a fender. Ever try to block sand water?

I expect I'd trade off my new fenders for a nice set of 1970's before you end up with no Daytona Fender and no '69's either. :Twocents:

charger_fan_4ever

Again I'm amazed AMD does not repro 70 fenders. With all the clones going on and the 70 fender picking is pretty much over with they would sell quite a few i'm sure.

I was over a year looking for a good drivers side fender. Bought one and it was only surface rust as described but every inch of the fender was beat. Metal was all spongy like a soup can.

BigBlockSam

stinger makes 70 fiberglass fenders to go with there nose . id rather metal ones though

Be happy to dick.. you were not a buyer anyway. wasted my time a month ago when you had one in TX, hows that one going?

djcarguy

he had pics or add on fenders here for long time now???  cut all that rubber seal flange junk off nose and move it back up on fenders a few inches and then just close bumper indent and get rid of all side markers and indents..  search and look how magnum force nose is attached could do it with 1/4 twist locks and cut to fit along hood..   million ways if doing more race and custom..beside real daytona nose is too long and way out there on those extra long 70 fenders ,,,,,from the side view????? :Twocents: :Twocents: :popcrn: :2thumbs:

Blown70

I did in fact tell him I would get him MORE pictures, but unlike some I do have things going on outside of taking photos of fenders.

I did OFFER to send them to his cell phone to help, dont have a phone number, so, therefore that is not going to work.

& now I really dont care to waste my time with someone who has wasted mine in the past.  $300 for two fenders... not going to find a better deal and yea they need work.

But they can go back on the shelf or to a better less dickish buyer.  I dont really HAVE to sell them.

Indygenerallee

Less dickish buyer eh? You sound like a real dick yourself offering pics and not sending them your the one with the panties in a bunch and i told you I can't get pics on my cell phone!!! Seems like everyone has something to sell then won't sell it !!!  met 2 guys online so far that make excuses and hee-haw around and then either won't send pics or won't send parts (even after agreeing to pay all shipping!!)  good to see some people are loaded up with cash to the gills they refuse to sell stuff they have for sale!!!! Im done with it, once I get my 70 hood from Rene I am going to start modifying these AMD fenders to work. Have a nice one "Blown"  :2thumbs:

Ohh yet, too recall wasting my time a month ago?  hmmmm forget about that?  I get the cash in my hand the fenders would ship the next day.  I dont f-around when parts are paid for..... just when someone jerks me around the month before, sorry I doubted that you were a serious buyer after the first jerkoff.

Again, GOOD LUCK with your car looks like a good project.

I only got ahold of you once on the fenders? and then you told me the price and the other jacktard in Texas was dragging his feet took him a week to get pics then after another couple weeks of trying to get ahold of him on price of shipping he says he could not ship them because of "personal problems.... yada yada yada" Thats when I got back ahold of you the other night and then you told me TWICE on two different nights you were gonna get me pics and NEVER DID!! It's always a excuse, you could have sent me a message stating the world had blown up in your front yard and you would get them to me later instead when you commented last night "buy mine instead of toiling away on those" I simply said I had not "seen hide nor hair" of them you took offense to that (for some odd reason) and blew up into a diva!?  :shruggy: Good for you maybe it's "that time of the month" for you. Maybe you should go get....... Nevermind  :D
