How many have been disappointed in the buyer after you sold your car

NOT sellers remorse, or a feeling of longing for the car or regret or "oh I never should have sold it".  How many have sold the car, wanted to sell it, were happy to sell it, were happy with the selling price everything about letting the car go only to be pissed off about something to do with the buyer after the fact?

Ugh.  That's just one of the many reasons why I haven't sold anything off yet.  I don't want to deal with s**tball sellers or the aftermath of a local sale.  I might consider selling to someone in China...

Sold my mint low mile 91 mustang LX coupe in January. Got the asking price and I knew the guy. Had it for sale last summer/fall just tire kickers so i put in the garage for the winter. Everything seemed to fall in place. I figured he was going to flip it anytime now. He got the car out 2-3 weeks ago. Doing DOH back road driving with it :( Seen it around in town doing donughts and just pounding on it.

I know its a ford but unmolested LX coupes that were real 5L cars are getting tough to come buy.

My brother owns a body shop and gets a call from him last week he was doing donughts and it caught a little too much traction and plowed a S10 10 feet up onto the guys front lawn. Blew out the air bag pushed the rad support into the fan. Last we heard insurance is scraping it. He was going to try to buy it back and fix it, but don't know. Probably end up parted out and the leftovers in a scrap yard. :RantExplode:

Wish it would have gone far away.

Had a friend that yrs ago had a nearly rust free original paint very nice colored vinyl top delete RT 440-4spd Challenger builder that after car was on trailer, money and all was complete, as the buyer was leaving indicated that was to be a re bodied parts car for a all his numbers of a titled HEMI 4spd car pcs he pulled back in the early 1970s.............  guess he was chasing torque boxes and factory 4spd aspects...........   just sad X two in my thoughts (one re body & one gone)   :-\ :rotz:

Lemme see, Sold car, Dude totalled it, I got what I was asking for it, and I'm gonna be disappointed?

If that be the case, then the cars should have never been sold in the first place. Just like I read a guy said about his 1970 340 Cuda Convert. "I won't sell because I know as soon as I do, it'll be up on BJ with a Hemi in it"...

This is why I always try and sell to out-of-state buyers when possible. I don't wanna see it, hear it, or want it ever again.

I think all topics have been covered ten times before but for the benefit of those of us who did not recall such and couldn't find it in a search I have presented it again.

If i sell a car and get my asking price, i don't care what happens to it after that. After all its not mine anymore. :Twocents:

a friend of mine sold his 1 owner, survivor 1971 Barracuda; slant6 3-speed, Belgian car, to a French guy; guy told him he was gonna drive and cherrish it.
My buddy sold the car; the french guy got home...and took the car apart to make it into some kind of 20-inch-wheeled streetcar...what a shame.

I sold my first Charger to someone I knew at a modest price.  Asked for right of first refusal if he ever sold it.  He seized the engine, sold it to a hack, and I never heard a word.  It wasn't my car – he was under no obligation – but it was still cause for annoyance.  If you have a potential buyer already on the hook – why not at least pick up the phone?

Same thing happened to me. My divorce forced the sale of my Superbird so I sold it to a friend who already owned a root-beer Superbird. We agreed on right of first refusal. I moved away and a few years later I saw it sold at a B&J auction. Can't say for sure, but I don't think he tried real hard to find me....    :slap:

Back in the mid '70's I sold my '68 Dart GTS 383, four speed car to a friend, he treated it well but a year or two later had it painted and the color was sort of a baby poop yellowish brown. I couldn't stand to look at it after that.
Then in the late '80's I sold my 1980 CJ5 Jeep, within a year the new owner had blown it's little "Iron Duke" engine.
Also in the late '80's I sold my sweet little '51 Chev pickup that I had restified and driven for 19 years. Within a year I saw it setting beside the freeway with a For Sale sign on it, and it was looking pretty rough.
Disappointed?  Heck yeah!

My father had a mint 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood with only 35.xxx miles, and my dad sold it to this guy that lives a mile or two away from us. About a month after selling it he had replaced the stock wheels with massive chrome spinning rims (he turned it into one of those stupid looking "donks".) and also tore out the spotless interior and replaced it with an ugly bright orange interior  :icon_smile_dissapprove:
I mean I understand that everyone is entitled to personalize their car however they want, but I think massive rims and a crappy interior job ruins a car, especially a mint, stock, Cadillac.  :brickwall:  :brickwall:

68 Bullitt Charger

Sold my 2000 Ply Prowler conv Yellow, w/ 12K orig mile's.....  I sold that along with 3 other real beautiful car's to purchase my house. The Prowler sale was a huge remorse. I attempted to buy it back and the Man that bought it said.."Joe, if I would you would get it, however its not for sale" I was so pissed. Well thats how it goes. :yesnod:

If you're going to worry about it, don't sell it.   :Twocents:   Of course, if you're forced to sell that's a different story.

I know what car you are talking about, I've seen it for sale and I remember the sellers wish to sell it to someone who wanted to keep it original.
Thats sad but it happens.....

I sold a my '72 Mercedes 280sel 4.5 for less than I got it for because I found it sad it was just sitting there. Later I found out that the guy who bought it from me owns a resto shop and sold it again but as a 300sel 6.3 clone.
For the guys who dont know anything about a Benz a 280 is worth around 3 grand as an unrestored driver. The same condition 300 6.3 is worth around 25 grand.
After I found that out I even regret selling that car more than any other one..... especially since they are great to drive even up to todays standards
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

I sold a R/T clone that was like the real one I have now, back in the 80's except it had a black top. The kid flipped it over within a year. I thought that sucked but got over it.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

My Curious Yellow 71 GTX.

Didn't want to sell it but needed the cash. Next owner put a full black vinyl top on it (YUCK!), among other modifications. Got resold to an Australian buyer and shipped to the other side of the planet.

That was one I always thought I might like to get back someday, but no chance of that now.

It always amazes me what someone else thinks your car should look like.  :eek2:

Back in 1992 I got a new neighbor and he wanted my 1968 Charger. I told him it was not for sale. Years later I decide to sell to him. He did not have much money so we worked out a trade for some big block stuff. He kept it a few weeks then sold it.  Although I did buy a 1969 Charger last year I do wish I had not sold my 68. Ive tried to find it but no luck. It was a 1968 with a 1969 tail light panel I installed myself. If anyone has seen it please let me know.

RallyeMike

The only time I have ever been disappointed was when I traded in a custom truck in the 80's. I put together an entire package on all the modifications, engine, trans, etc., The dealer threw it away and then when they resold the truck and the new owner couldn't figure out what he had, they gave the guy my phone number and told him to call me if he needed anything. Pricks!

It was the mini-truck custom craze era (78 Chevy Luv, Buick V6, TH350, Ford 8", Volvo radiator..... etc.)

I was talked or conned out of my first 70 Chall R/T , didn't want to sell or need the money , a guy just started pestering me to sell , he took it cleaned it up & flipped it , never forgot the feeling watching it drive away , I was choked , I didn't care about the $$ I just wanted my car back even if he paid me 3x what I had paid for it .

I had a 1975 Road Runner that I brought back to life after having been sitting for 10 years. Super fun car and lots of comments--a rolling car show.

I sold it to the parents of a 16 year kid for his first car.

Two weeks after the sale, I saw the car for sale on Craig's List with a blown motor listed---asking more than he paid for it.

I was forced to sell mine and didn't get what I really wanted for it under the circumstances. The buyer was a very nice guy and we discussed the potential of a buy back in the future. The buyer fell under hard times as well and it ended up at auction where he also got less than he really wanted.

The car ended up back on e-bay through a exotic/collector car dealer out of state. It was sold to an unknown buyer and then *POOF* gone for good. It may seem strange to have such an attachment to a "thing" but four and a half years of work and only one summer to enjoy it wasn't a fair trade off. In addition I had made a promise with where this car would end up and couldn't follow through.

Due to present health reasons, I do not think I could build another one which makes it harder to take the fact it is gone without an opportunity to someday buy it back. For some people, (like me) the sweat equity and labor of love has no price especially when you are building it from the heart and not the ego.

Kern Dog

I've built a few Dusters and Dart Sports with intentions of selling and have yet to feel bad about it. The Charger? H A !!! No way I'd sell this car. I've put too much of myself into it. For me the difference lies with what feelings that I have for the car while I owned it.
I had a 73 Duster years ago. I was making a home movie and it was was my "hero" car. I had SOOoooo much fun in that car! I went through tires like crazy, peeling out, skidding through turns, 180s, street drifting, (Away from any traffic) Off road through shallow streams, down hills, through tall grass....It was my version of the Duke boys General Lee.... I sold that car after I finished the movie. It helped pay for an engagement ring.
IF I found out today, 10 years later, that this car was up for sale, I'd JUMP at the chance to buy it back! 73 was the best selling year of the Plymouth line and they made a buttload of Dusters that year. I could find any other 73 Duster almost any day of the week, but i miss THAT car and what fun i had with it.

Fred

Often though the car is no longer what it was when you sold it. By that I mean it hasn't been looked after or it's been altered etc. And if that's the case, I don't think I'd really want it back.

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

Kern Dog

Thats true. Another angle is that you can never really go back. Things change and the car would feel different now. The thing people may be looking for is the WAY they felt when they owned a specific car. Years pass, life happens and even if you could get the old car back in the exact same condition, it still could never be the same feeling.

Fred

Exactly...................the past needs to remain in the past!  :2thumbs:

After I sell a car, it belongs to someone else, they can do what they want with it. As long as I got my stack-o-cash...they can paint it orange and jump a creek for all I care.

Because I kow that some buyers can easily break the hearts of sellers by parting out a car, or chopping it up or whatever, I try to be a better buyer!

The guy I bought my 69 from had taken very good care of it.  It still has its original worn interior and it's getting a few bubbles here and there but for a non restored car that's not too bad.  It got a new paintjob and rechromed the bumpers soon after he bought it in '93.  The guy made sure it was also mechanically sound and he took care of that car as if it was his child.  Save a few interior light bulbs everything works on this car.  When he sold it to me (had another kid on the way) he never said anything about what I should do with it or push his opinions on me.  He knew that once it was sold it was no longer any of his business.

In return I send him updates from time to time, telling him what I did with the car such as changing the rear end gear, getting better shocks, little things like adding a console armrest and redoing the instrument cluster.  He loves the fact that his baby is getting all these upgrades and is being used as a cruiser.  I know it makes him feel better about his decision, I know from his wife that it was a very though decision for him to sell his baby.
I just want him to feel good and sleep at night.  I also know there will be a time where he doesn't want to hear from me and the car so he can let go, but at least he can let go with peace of mind.

About 10 years ago I sold a MINT '70 Formula Firebird. All original, gorgeous car...

The idiot that bought it decided he'd make a convertible out of it.. with a sawzall... He hacked the roof off, and threw a cover over it. It still sits, 4' deep in mud, in his yard today...

Like others have said, I got my asking price.. But it sucked seeing it that way.

Dino, YOU are a nice man. What a cool thing for you to do. I wish that I had contact info of the guy that sold me my 70. I'd LOVE to send him a progress report.

This is the age old question....

Is it worth the money you sold it for to see your old car cut up, crashed, rotting away, etc.?

These are the things that go through the mind when some jackwad comes up with the cash.

Hey thanks Red, much appreciated!   :2thumbs:

I do believe that you should treat people the same way you want them to treat you.  If I was the seller and he was the buyer I'd hope he would do the same for me.
