Where's a good place to get a USS Arizona miniature? Pics of finished project

My daughter is going to build a Pearl Harbor diorama and we'd like to locate a diecast or plastic USS Arizona miniature/toy/model that's already assembled. Can't find anything on Ebay that's small enough (we need something about 6-10 inches long). None of the toy stores in my area seem to carry warships and the best I can do at the hobby shops so far is a 17" Revell model, which is too big. At this point I'd settle for just about any WWII era ships but not finding much out there. Help!

Lindberg used to make a kit, (relatively recent) that I think was a Pearl Harbor memorial or an Attack on Pearl harbor kit.  If I recall it had two 1/700 scale kits in it.  only other shot I can think of is see if there might ba a USS Arizona store on line.  I seem to recall a "Micro Machines" battleship diecast years ago.  You might also check some of the Bbattleship memorail websites for an online store.  (USS North Carolina, USS Massachusetts, USS Alabama, USS Texas, USS Wisconson, USS New Jersey, etc).  Hope this helps.

I did finally find a local store that carries a 1:700 scale Arizona which is about as big as we can go at 10.4" but due to some procrastination we can't wait for shipping on something else. My daughter kind of sprung this on me or I would have started this search a lot earlier. Anyway, looks like we're going to do something more focused on just the Arizona rather than the harbor and Ford Island. I think we're going to do a dock with the Arizona listing on its way down, similar to the famous photo. I found a couple of diecast zeros last night and an F6F Hellcat. Couldn't find a correct US fighters so the Hellcat won't be totally accurate (there were F4F Wildcats in Hawaii) but at least it's close. She wants to use a P-38 Lightning too which was nowhere near Pearl harbor either but they sure look cool.

Now I'm trying to find a photo of how she was docked prior to the attack so we can replicate that too.

Well, more bad news. I called a guy at a hobby shop last night and asked if he had a 1:700 Hobby Boss Arizona in stock (like their website said they did) and he said yes, and he'll hold it for me. I went there today to pick it up and instead what they hand me is a 1:426 Revell Arizona. So one of the employees and I go back to the wall where all the ship models are and we look and look and after 20 minutes of looking we cannot find a single ship in stock that was at Pearl Harbor. So I said to hell with it and bought a 1:700 DD-797 Cushing which wasn't even commissioned until 1944.

So now my girl and I need to have a talk about planning ahead. That or I need to take the slightest comment she makes about school projects dead serious next time.

Here's what we ended up with. There are some obvious scale and perspective issues but overall it got the idea across. We tried to give it a bit of optimism concerning the US getting its unprepared butt kicked at Pearl Harbor by showing a nosediving Zero (we did manage to shoot down 29 of them) and a dogfight with the American in persuit. Sounds like my daughter had one of the best ones there so we're happy.

The smoke is stretched out cotton balls that I hit lightly with some flat black primer from the Charger restoration stash. Cassie made the explosions look pretty cool and we tried to make a decent-looking Ford Island replica with air-dry clay and sand (glued down with some 3M Super 77, also from the Charger stash). We got the planes at our local Fred Meyer for $3 each after getting stymied at the hobby shops. I did end up buying and helping build the bigger ship in front and a friend donated the Battleship game pieces. It was a fun little project.

That's what we were shooting for but I think it would have worked better in a bigger box. But hey, it's fine.

Please, don't buy anything for me. Keep that money for your family fun. My girl got out of this what she needed to even though we couldn't find the Arizona. BTW, here's one interesting fact I learned through all of this; did you know that the Arizona was launched in 1915? She was close to 30 years old when she went down.

That mini-ship sold for only $11.50.   I shoulda bid on it  

Arizona was state of the art for WW1 but basically outdated by WW2 along with most of the other battleships sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor.  Too slow to keep up with carriers.   Others lived on for awhile as gunfire support mostly after refits to add more AA.   USS Texas is last example of WW1 era battleships we have.  

Arizona "starred' in the movie Here comes the Navy in the 30's.   Jimmy Cagney,  Pat Obrien and Gloria Stuart - the old lady from Titanic.

Mom is going to be 80 years old this year and I'm going to take her along. I think she is more excited about it than I am.    Oh and I would have talked to you before buying anything.

It's hard to imagine how fast the Arizona went down. More than 1,100 men on board who didn't have enough time to get out. Crazy.
