Had a recent vacation and visited friends in San Diego. Made a visit to the USS Midway, one of America's greatest aircraft carriers. Can't wait to go back for more. Pictures cannot do justice to the majesty of that ship. What a great day.

Of course some of you Navy guys, if you served on the Midway, you maybe never want to see it again, understandably. But for the rest of everyone, it's a great day for kids, families, adults, history buffs, and frankly every American.

Spent 4 years on the USS Constellation CV-64 out of San Diego. Those photos bring back a lot of good memories.

I gotta renew my membership for that museum.  Despite all of the surf, sun and sluts in San Diego the Midway is my favorite part of town.  There's a part of the ship on the port side, that's under cover of some structures above, overlooking the water-I could spend hours in that space...

I spent 3 years on the Midway.  I was stationed in Yakuska Japan.  I would love to see the bething compartment and 3 Able fireroom down in the pit.

Would that be the very same carrier that I boarded in the port of Fremantle way back in the early '80s?
The US Navy have traditionally used Fremantle as a place for R&R over the years. Helps the local economy enormously too. http://hawkseye.bravepages.com/australia/fremantle/fremantle.htm
I remember as a kid it was huge.

Nice stuff Dan! Nothing like the Midway or Hornet for a tour and/or a tour.  Seeing these old gals close to a modern CVN is mind bogging when you consider how small they are to the likes the Vincent or the Lincoln. Giants in my book.
FLY NAVY/Marine Corps or take the bus!

What I couldn't get over is how people lived in those things: walking, standing, just being in motion.  I'm 5'4" and I had to duck and squeeze through a lot of the ship.  How the heck did big strapping sailors function in those things over the decades in such tight confines?  Another hat's off moment to the men and women who sacrifice so much, including breathing room...

Very possible :shruggy: I was there from 1980-1983 and ported once in Perth.  I don't remember the year but It was during the Iran hostage crissis.  Beautiful country and beautiful women.  We had several guys not onboard when we left port

Wouldn't blame them for going AWOL.
This is an awesome part of the world to live Husk.
I'm pretty sure that Midway was the first carrier to actually dock in Fremantle Harbour too. Most of the others were too large and had to anchor off shore out past the heads.

I was actually surprised at how small the Midway and the Ranger looked when we pulled up behind it on the Kitty Hawk just before the Midway was decomissioned. Had several buddies staioned on that ship while it was homeported in Yokosuka. I've heard about a lot of good times on that ship while it was over in PI. I'm pretty sure I still have the Navy Times describing the decomissioning of the Midway.

I spent time on the Independence over in Yokosuka and also visited Fremantle. I had a great time on Rotnest island.
