Help with oil change

Hey guys. I can't believe I am asking this question but better safe than sorry. Getting ready to do my first oil change on the '74. Is regular old 10w/30 good enough? (5W/30 better?) In the back of my mind, I'm thinking I remember someone telling me to run straight weight oil.

In which case, looking for advice on what grade of oil to use. Just got the car and don't know when the last oil change was done. 318 2brl.

It depends on your driving style, driving conditions, your weather, and the quality of the motor. My first choice is 20-50 traditional. Your needs will be different.

You need to consider factors like: if you drive it hard, have lots of hills/highways/traffic, do you have deep freeze temps or 100 degree days, and do you have leaks? A case could be made for every weight out there.

Not any oil will do.  Regardless of weight, you will also need one with plenty of zzdp:

By 1974 the valves would be hardened, as unleaded fuel was now the law of the land. So a zinc additive is not critical.

If you think the engine was replaced with an earlier 318, then yes, hit it with zinc or Valvoline Race Oil.

Still not a bad idea for preventative help for old metal in any engine. Cheap insurance.

It has the original 318 in it. Living in Iowa we do have weather extremes, however the car will not be driven during the winter months. This is not a daily driver, just something I will pull out of the garage on nice evenings, once or twice a month, May through August, for a nice cruise. Most likely less than 50 miles each time. Won't be driven hard.

Just want to make sure I put the correct oil in it.

Thanks for the advice so far. It is greatly appreciated.
