Frequent stalling when hot...

'68 Charger, mild fresh 440 engine (I don't know any history on it), with a Comp Cam 280H.  The car has a Holley 750cfm mechanical double pumper, and a four speed with 3:23 gears.  I don't think this carb is exceptionally well suited for this car, but I have less than 300 miles on the new engine, and it seems to run pretty well.  My timing is it 10 degrees, plugs look nice and grayish/tan, and I have the float style where you can adjust them by removing a port on the side, and raise/lower them with a tool on top, until fuel runs out the port.  On the high way, it runs at 180 degrees, in traffic around 195.  It carries 75 psi oil pressure at speed, and drops to around 60-65 psi at idle.  I don't have any vacuum leaks.

I drove it about 25 miles to work this morning.  It purred like a kitten, until I hit a long line of traffic at the construction site gate.  In the line of traffic, it just died several times, and it wasn't from bad use of the clutch.  It always started right back up, after a few revolutions of the engine (a few cranks).

After I got through the traffic, got to the parking lot, and had to back in, it stalled several times there as well.  Always started right back up, but it is a very annoying problem, and it shouldn't do that.  Reflecting on things, it did the same thing a few weeks ago at a gas station.  I had driven the car for an hour or so, then had to turn the car around at the gas station, to get the filler by the pump.  It stalled twice doing that.  A guy looked around the pump and said, 'runnin' on fumes, eh?'  I said, yeah, that's it!

What could be causing the stalling problem?  My clear plastic fuel filter is right against the upper radiator hose, and I can see gas in it (although it's less than half full).  I've been thinking that maybe I have a heat problem, and that maybe some sort of phenolic carb spacer would help.

What do you guys think?  How can I start isolating this problem?  Thanks!

Sounds like the fuel is boiling off in the float chambers.  :shruggy:

Block off the heat passages under the intake.

Makesure your fuel line isn't sitting on a valvecover or the intake and add a phenolic spacer between th carb and intake

Make sure no part of your fuel line is too close to your headers/exhaust manifolds. Had the same problem with my 71.

Heat issues, for sure.  Are you running a fuel vapor separator also?  Maybe you should check if it's clogged/dirty also.  I'd also double check for vacuum leaks...

Yep to the two above.

What kind of intake are you running?

If space is an issue use a thick gasket & the block off valley pan.
