R.I.P. Mr Scruggs. Heaven needs a great banjo player.  I saw his son, Randy, on a Youtube video of Carlene Carter around 1994 playing Mother Maybelle's old guitar for a song by her and still listen now and again. Here is a quick link and Randy playing the guitar.

In addition to writing and recording the "Ballad of Jed Clampett", did he not also do a cameo on the Beverly Hillbillies?
He was one of the greatest.

Sad day for bluegrass  :'(

The first song I learned on the banjo (as is most banjo players), was Earl's version of Cripple Creek. He was a pioneer indeed, in fact his style of banjo playing is referred to as 'Scrugg's Style' to this day, and the alternating thumb roll is commonly referred as a 'Scrugg's Roll'.

I always thought Scruggs along with Don Reno (even though his style of playing was a lot different) really pioneered three finger banjo playing. Now Scruggs is up there with Reno now picking those big five strings in the sky.

RIP Earl,

Jason

I am a Bluegrass fan, and loved him. I have seen him perform many times.  It was a sad day, when he passed on. Cheers to all B.G. music fans. May his memory live on.
