Speakers in the dash?

Has anyone installed speakers in the dash of their 68-70 Charger? I'm getting ready to swap in a new windshield and it seems like a great time to add speakers there. I've seen all different sized speakers in other cars, but I don't recall seeing a Charger with them.

I don't know that there is a lot of room up there for a pair is there?

:scratchchin:  could try ,   duplicating the opitionl three speaker dash option !! finding the dash ,  top mounted speaker grills , could prove a problem locating though  :scratchchin:

And certainly better than cutting a couple of holes in a vintage dash.

WHITE AND RED 69

I have 2 3.5" polks in the factory holes in my dash and while I like them you would probably get better sound quality from a bigger speaker in the door or kick panel.

How rare was a three speaker dash? Mine has three speakers and the two side ones are tiny!!! Im in the middle of restoring it and im gonna leave them out. just a big one in the middle and some 6x9s in the rear.

On my 70 Charger, I ended up using Alpine SPS-080A. They fit perfect in those holes.

My 69 has the factory three speaker dash.  Can't remember what size of speaker fits in the holes its pretty tight.  I installed them when I had the windshield out.  They really make a difference on sound if you have a modern stereo with a fade option....I like them and the way they look.  I will take a photo

I checked a bunch of website for the "Alpine SPS-080A" and they all say the product is discontinued. Know of any other company that would have speakers fit in there?

I used a bracket sold by this guy http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,78626.0.html and a pair of Boston 3.5 inch speakers. The guy says the bracket is ready to use but I found a couple of problems. The first was just a preference problem in that I didn't want the silver colored aluminum showing through the speaker grill so I prepped one side of it and painted it SEM Trim Black to match the dash. Then I had a functional problem with getting the heater control cables to clear the right speaker. The one heater cable that comes off at a 45-degree angle is the problem but I believe if you used a couple of cheapo speakers with small magnets you'll be alright. ::) I'm kidding, but the Bostons I got are deep and have big magnets for their size so they are problematic in that sense. I may have solved that problem by redrilling the two mounting holes so that it moves the assembly forward and once my heater control assy. is all restored and put back together I will install it with the one cable tied off with a p-clamp so that it (hopefully) won't be touching the speaker at all. We shall see.

Also, FYI, if you need new mounting bolts like I did you can use #10 (3/16") carriage bolts. A helpful mounting hint if you're doing this on your own is to put the bolts in place and then tape the heads to the dash with masking tape before you go underneath trying to put the nuts/washers on. :2thumbs:

Since 68-70 dash frames are not exactly falling out of the sky, I think that I am going to skip cutting into mine. I'm going to try to figure a way to fit 5 1/4" or 6" speakers in the lower front kick panels. The space is tight, but I have a spare pair of kick panels and some crappy 6" speakers to practice the "mock-up". This saves me from buying speakers that may or may NOT work.
Later, I might install the dual 3 1/2" speaker in the middle of the dash as shown above.  I'm curious though as HOW it gets wired.....?

Any clue on that one?

I ended up getting the dual 120 watt kenwoods from year one. My only complaint is the mounting holes needed to be re-drilled as they were too far apart. I didn't see it available but when I bought mine they did a stock mono speaker replacement.

I put a dual-voice coil speaker in my '68. Supposedly sounds better & has better bass response than the two smaller speaker setup. Clears the radio, cables, etc with no problems. Might not fit with a factory 8-track, as those radios are just slightly taller. Fits fine with a stock/modern-converted AM thumbwheel.

Was the 3 speaker dash an option in '68?  Is there a diiference in '68 and '69 frames?  just want to make sure I am not chasing ghosts.  I did the conversion to the factory 3 speaker dash in my Challenger and love it.  I already found the grills for my Charger just need the 3 speaker frame if they even had that in '68. :shruggy:  Can someone break down what all the specific parts are for the factory '68 charger setup, is there a special retainer for the speaker grill from underneath like the factory e-body setup?

After much deliberation and measuring, I fitted 4" Polk 2 way speakers in the lower kick panels. The had to be installed to sit 1/4" outside of the kick panels. This puts the speaker magnet against the body. I put an 1/8" shim washer between the body and Parking brake mechanism to move the brake lever over. This gave me more clearance for the speaker grille. I didn't use the grilles that came with the Polk speakers. Instead, I used grilles for 6" speakers which sat outside of the "spaced out" 4" units. The kick panel speaker location required a little thinking, but it worked out. They sound great and i don't have to risk damage to the dash!
Thanks for the suggestions...Greg
