I know this has probably been beaten to death but I'm getting ready to start a newly rebuilt 67 hp 440 and am interested to know what you all perfer to use as your break in oil and reason why!  Examples: It has this this and this in it, its made here(USA) , or even this is what I have used for years and it works! so lets here! O and right now I'm leaning towards Brad Penn!

Fred

I used the below mentioned product to break in my hemi.......................

BRAD PENN® PENN-GRADE 1®
Break-In Oil

SAE 30 mono-grade oil formulated specifically to meet the critical lubrication needs of new engines during break-in while allowing proper seating of rings and component 'run-in'.  Enhanced levels of "zinc" (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate a.k.a. ZDDP) and superior oil film strength from Penn Grade™ base oils offer complete anti-wear, anti-scuffing protection for even the most demanding of applications such as those presented by break-in of engines with 'flat tappet' cams.

Now I'm using  PENN-GRADE 1®........ 20W-50

I used Lucas breakin oil on my rebuild, it's a mono 30 dino and is loaded with zinc/ phos. Changed it after breakin and refilled with the same. Running it for the first 500 miles. No problems, rings seem to have seated well, 180psi as per spec.

No matter which "Break-in" oil you use, make sure it's at least 1800-2000 PPM(Parts Per Million) of Zinc/Phospherous.

FWIW, I run "Spectro" brand racing oil. Remember, break in is great, but you will need to run the good oil for the life that 440.

thanks for the replies every one looks like I'm going to go with Brad Penn and recommend that the engine use it for its life time.
