I just screwed up and cost myself some money, so I'm asking this time.
1. Can a Suregrip unit from a 742 be put in a non Suregrip housing? I think I saw that it can with some clearancing?
2. Is it possible to have a 742 case with a 74 date code?   It has 94 on it. ?
Thanks for any help.

All differentials, Sure-Grip or not, are interchangeable in all 8 3/4" housings but the bearings are different. As long as the bearings are correct for the differential they will interchange.

'68 was the last year of the 742 but I suppose replacements were made several years after that.
The 4 in the casting date could be 1964.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The funny thing is if it is a 64, how is it the rear doesn't look to have ever been apart. OEM gaskets, no silicone, no rounded off nuts. I've been around cars and it looks untouched. The snubber is different than what a 71-4 usually has though. It is square and flat and fits into a slot. The usual one has 2 prongs holding it on. It also uses a big yoke for the driveshaft. I guess it doesn't matter. It's out. It has to be a replacement center unless the factory was throwing in whatever centers they had because of phasing out the 8 3/4 in 74. Thanks for a response.
