what should i use for paint on the motor? i wanna go with orange but im not sure which one to get. i could go with real paint or rattle can paint. i just want to get a good color. i used the mopar rattle can paint some time ago and i remember it to be very watery.

You did not specify what motor or what year Charger in your post but if you are referring to your name (69RTSE) it would be orange paint. My restorer got a nearly full quart of Hemi-Orange engine paint from another professional restorer and sprayed the motor with a gun to make it look right but ..... later he had to touch up a couple of small places on the motor and used spray paint to do it. He actually used Allis-Chalmers Orange tractor paint on it to see if it matched in an inconspicuous place and it matched perfectly! Get a couple of cans of this paint and spray-bomb away as it looks great! He got the paint at a local Tractor Supply store pretty cheap and it will work.

Actually - Hemi Orange is incorrect on a 440. In 69 for instance, there were 3 oranges. Early Hemi, late hemi and a different orange to those two for the 440.

I have an early build '69. '68 date coded interior parts, engine, trans, alternator, '68 style doors, early '69 front bumperettes, etc. I stripped the engine of it's driveway applied engine paint in '82 for a rebuild and found the original color to be '68 turqouise. Anything is possible.

Frank Badalson's restoration column that he writes for MCG is about orange engine paint in the current issue.  Haven't read it yet but I did note a photo with several examples there.

So Im guessing the 383 HP would be the same then as the 440?

I too have used the watery mopar paint. I was not impressed. I went with Duplicolor DE1622 "Chrysler Orange" -  it covers a LOT better - not watery and is available at O'reily's

Yes - 69 383 HP without air would be the same orange as a 440 HP  :2thumbs:

If it was Holley equipped it would be turquoise in 69. There were a few with A/C that were turquoise in 69 as well

When I did this engine I used the Roger Gibson/Frank Badelson 69 440 engine paint.PPG acrylic enamel as factory, applied right to the bare metal with NO kind of epoxy or priming, except the valve covers that I had to do bodywork on.Also,NO hardener/catalyst.
It comes in pints,I bought one, after mixed with reducer 8:1,there was none leftover after painting the engine. It covers almost instantly, way more coverage compared to rattle cans, and looks correct, per Roger and Frank,LOL.
