Working on going through my superbird and putting everything back to numbers correct. I'm discovering my motor is a mixture of original parts and not originals.  Its a original 6 pack car. Few questions, can somebody post a picture of the correct HP harmonic balancer so I can make sure mine is correct ?  How would I tell if I have the correct crank ?  Does anybody make a direct replacement for the 440 6 barrel cam ?

The 440+6 camshaft back in the day was pretty much had the same profile as the 440 4bbl Magnum/Super Commando except structurely, it had a 3-bolt camgear design like the 426 Hemi camshaft. The lobes had a special treatment as well. But, in all practical sense, you could throw in a Item# MPPP4452783 (383 Magnum/Super Commando/Road Runner and 440 Magnum/Super Commando) and it be the same.. The vibation dampner was nothing more than a 440 4bbl Magnum/Super Commando. 4bbl's and 6bbl's shared pretty much the same short block components.

Below is a picture a (left, '70/'71 heavy rod dampner) & (right, '69 and earlier dampner). Got it from a previous thread here. Disregard the writing. Albeit it is correct, it gives the wrong impression that it is solely for a 6pack application.. false.

If I were sporting a six-hole intake manifold using stock heads and exhaust manifolds, I'd be running one of Mr. SixPack's (Bob Karakashian) cam grinds.  Here's a detailed thread from Moparts.com about his stuff:

Bobs cams are great and after trial and error i would never run anything else in my six pak motor

This "Bob" camshaft, does it produce enough vacuum at idle that every 6bbl car I've driven needs, especially with power brakes?

The 70 six pack crank does have a different part number from the crank in standard and hp 440s.  I have not found anyone who knows why.  Anyone??

Correction: the hp and six packs crank had a unique part number.  I pulled apart a stock untouched hp moter and a standard 440 side by side and could determine no difference.  Heat treating?  ???

Heat treating would be correct,.006,once it's ground it is just another 440 HP crank..

My  :Twocents: ... FWIW...  ;)

The 1970-72 440 Six Pack / 440 4BBL HP / "Big Rod" RB Engines / Etc.  were externally balanced by using both a weighted harmonic balancer (non symmetric ring) AND a weighted flywheel or torque converter.  Weighted flex plates and balance plates are available today to allow use of a neutral balance converter.

As for crank journal hardness, I believe the Six Pack cranks were shot peened, but not nitrided like the Hemi cranks were.

The low taper ratio camshaft design allowed for higher revs and longer cam life.  Mopar Performance sells reproductions, but Bob K's cams are superior... as are modern lightweight rods and many other modern replacement parts..
