Locking gas cap

I know this is an old topic and please let me preface this by saying that I have done a search and I have read all the result threads on this topic.

From what I can tell Layson's sells the locking caps that I am looking for.  However I have read many negative threads about dealing with them.  After reading of others poor experiences and the leagal issues from a couple years back, I am extremely hesitant to send them any of my money or credit card information.

That being said, my two questions.

1 - Is it safe today to deal with Layson's?  Any recent experiences?

2 - Are there other alternatives to their locking cap?  If so, where?

Many thanks!

- Gene

Ghoste

Have you tried e bay or any of the other nos part suppliers?

I have looked on eBay.

I'm new to Mopar's so I have done Google searches and such but nobody seems to carry a repro part.  Not sure where else to look.  If you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

But not if Laysons don't deliver.  (and I truly dont know what is going on with them right now so my remark should not be taken as a condemnation)

moparstuart

I bought mine from layson's with out an issue  , the big thing with them is you have to make sure they have it in stock ,  if they dont they charger you for it and them you wait untill they have your part in stock .  But if you make sure its for sure in stock you should not have a problem   :Twocents:
GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

For sure! Both ghoste and moparstuart make good points. I have never dealt with Layson's (or any other of the links I posted) so I cannot comment on any of them.

Does Layson's have an actual "storefront" that someone could walk into to purchase something?  :shruggy:

Might be worth it if one person who is close could go there to see if it's in stock or maybe buy it to ship.

Thank you all!

I very well may be taking 1HotDaytona up on thier offer!

I have no clue how my search on eBay did not yield those results!   :shruggy:

Thank you all again for such quick responses!

If he doesn't buy it from you 1HotDaytona, I would be interested.  PM me, if so.  Thanks, Len.

Layson's was just at the Indy swap so whatever issue they had with selling in public seems to have been cleared up. I have 2 of their locking caps and an original. They are obviously different - but I'm not sure you can really tell when they are installed. They are cheap and seem to do the job. Originals used to be $$$ (and still aren't affordable) so this is a good option. As mentioned, make sure they have them in stock (which can be said for most repro sellers including Year One).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

When looking on ebay for parts (especially nos) if I have the part#, I do a search by part# only, as well as searching by description. That was how I found those 3 caps I posted. Just thought you might find this helpful.  :2thumbs:

OK, feeling ever so slightly better!  I would also typically leverage the part number in the search.  I just didn't know it.

For the help, thank you.  Yes, hmmmm

Does anyone know what the key blank number/type key is for these locks? I have a lock, and need to have some keys made, and can't seem to find the blanks. Thanks!!
Jason.

Couldnt a good locksmith figure it out?

If you go with Layson's make sure you ask for Rick Keesler.  Otherwise don't waste your time, he's the only honest person there or so I've heard.  He'll tell you if it's in stock & will most likely wrap & ship it.

Ghoste

Now that you mention his name, he even turns up on here from time to time does he not Mike?

Been quite a while since I've seen him here.  Last time I seen him here he was peddling these.

First - I want to thank 1HotDaytona for selling me his locking gas cap.  He sent it straight away and it arrived 1.5 days later.  It's in excellent shape and I could not be happier!  So thank you once more!

Jason - Regarding the key blanks...  I took the one I got to Farm & Fleet and they tried to match it up.  They did not have an exact match, closest they got was a key code "78" as labeled on their package.  Anyway, the length was different but after looking at how simplistic of a design the locking gas cap is, I told her to cut me one anyway.  I'd much rather spend the $1.49 trying then visiting a locksmith.  Long story short, my gamble paid off!  I now have two keys for the cap!  I don't know key blanks or anything like that, but like I siad, this one is labeled "78" if that helps.

I took the tumbler out and took it to a hardware store, and as luck would have it, I met a guy that had a similar problem too. Anyways, he found the key blank in two tries!!! What he found was a ILCO B1(1098M) blank. I took it to work, where I have a key cutter, and in 10 mins of "custom fitting" I now have a key, AND a spare!
If you or anyone else reading this would like the locksmith "crash course" on how to fit this lock with a key, send me an email, and I will walk you through it! Easy!
