What should I expect with 20k and looking for a 2nd gen charger? These are my expectations tell me if im far off or not. Need to plan ahead to buy a 2nd gen.

-no rust
-daily driveable
-440 engine
-black
-shifts great no slip
-non matching #s OK.
-engine rebuilt and tranny
-paint faded OK no biggie (will repaint)
-front disc brakes all 4 OK if it has it.

Too much expectations for 20k? Im basing this on what I have seen here and on ebay only the NO rust well thats had to deciper since most folks wont disclose rust until usually after we purchase it we see it (hard to detect I guess). I want a black one original or repaint over and have the engine bay black. NON matching numbers is ok in my book as long as it has a 440 and it runs and having a rebuilt is a PLUS same with tranny. Front disc brakes be nice or all 4s.

Am I asking too much for 20k?

Hard to say.

I'd go with a fair at best interior and amateur paint/bondo bubbling ect for 20k on the road. You never know though.

When I was looking for a car these "drivers" in the 10-20 k range were all really 5K project cars that were thrown together. Really needed to be stripped down and started fresh on like you would with a project car.

IMO its either get a project and rebuild it or buy a well documented rebuilt car. I didn't have $40-50k to lay down for one at the time. I went project route and bought shares in AMD over a couple years lol.

I believe you can find a driver for 20k and a reliable one.  Some of your other goals may be a little tougher to fulfill.

Which ones you think would be toughest to fill?

My goal is to find one that is driveable and not 'rot' on me and get a new engine in there with a blower. buy a complete engine with blower or get a blower on the 440 as long as its healthy enough to handle low boost roughly 5psi or so nothing crazy. I saw a forum member wanting to sell his for 15k I believe is NGS member in phill I thought was fair price he said it needed brakes bled and it was a good car seemed like no rust at all either and black with 440. I might be able to push to 25k category if it makes that much of a difference I would wait 6 more months to get there if the difference of a 20k to 25k is that much better.

Well this is only my opinion but to my thinking, if it's rust free it is either a survivor or someone has done all the body work.  In both cases it means the car was special enough that someone wanted to save it which often means an RT or at least a big block car.  The 440 could be a swap but in many cases you are again looking at an RT.  If it is a swap and its been done into a rust free body, then again I think the seller will have some time and money invested they want back.  The disc brakes were an option that was typically only ordered on Chargers with a bunch of other stuff so it is more likely to once more see it on an RT.  But the discs could be found on anything so you could luck out there.  As for four wheel discs, well that means someone has done the conversion so once more I see them as having been doing a bunch of stuff to the car and wanting their money back.
Combine any or all of it with the rust free body and you have your work cut out for you.  I don't want to discourage you because your goals aren't impossible just difficult.  And I am by no means the expert so I fully expect to see other replies counter to mine.

I sold my 68 for 20k and I think someone got a great deal.  It was a 68 383/727, open rear, matching #s Never any rust, column shift, QQ1 paint, painted white RT stripe, white Vynil top, After market AM/FM CD player hidden in glove box.  Nice ride won many local car shows.

I think that guy is a little steep. ^

Troy should chime in. He had a pretty dang clean '68 for sale awhile back. Not sure if he sold it or still has it? He was asking about the same as the SanFran guy if I recall.

If it's mechanically intact and drivable for $20K or less, then it's most likely an older restoration/preservation.  Probably a near-stock car with a base model VIN.  It probably was never allowed to fall into really BAD condition at any time in its life.  This kind of car will need a bunch of resto work to really be nice, and it probably won't have new resto-mods like disc brake conversions or better audio stuff.  But as it sits right now, it's driveable and looks good from 20-30 feet.

Thanks guys for all the opinions I need it I dont want to get 'jipped' if you get my drift such as the horror stories from HPLAG etc.

Im located in Phoenix, AZ, but more than willing to travel the 48 states, but the car has to be driveable back to AZ.

elanmars-I think that price is a little steep based on what I have saw last 6 months I think (I could be wrong) that one is a scam I saw that add in a different state same 2 pics, but the other one had 2 more pics of the same car vs this one having 2 pics.

41husk-not really looking at cars that wons shows usually those folks demand alot of money, but if you sold one that won shows and what not then like you said the guy probably got a good deal and I hope maybe I can find something similiar based on my budget.

Ghoste-I like everyones opinion man before I pull the plug on a car of course im gonna come on here and ask what everyones thinks it worth and go from there. I like everyones experiences so I can absorb them and learn from them or get lucky.

Not in a major rush to get one so soon like I said im just gonna let my money sit and grow till I find one I like, but without overpaying it of course and I dont want to go over a certain budget here.

It's out there but you are going to have to be very patient and spend lots of hours searching.  It took me just short of 2 yrs and I was on autotempest.com, ebay, cars-on-line.com, you name it just about every evening. My wife was starting to wonder if she would ever get me back.  Several cars I missed, was second on, the inspection resulted in a pass, etc. Even had some guy back out of a deposit with a lame excuse. Whatever..  Ended up with this:

Not perfect but as Ghoste pointed out it is an older restoration. Was within the range you posted.   It all depends upon how long you can wait for the right car.
