Or is this one of those things that are pretty much a waste of time?

I tried locally restore keystone wheels, but when I searched for ppl to make the job, chrome shops etc, the cost was aprox the same than buy new ones. PLUS THE UNEFICIENT OF LOCAL GUYS I began not trust on them. Lot of ppl never gave me even a quote, just said me they don't make the job ( I know they made it in the past, but simply wanted easy jobs now )

I think an exception will be some specific, unique and very valuable wheels.
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

Depends what type of wheel. Anything chrome... forget about it. You'll be in way over your head cost wise.

The aluminum and magnesium stuff might be more worth while, but the casting processes 40+ years ago left much to be desired.

I've had good luck polishing up Aluminum slot mags. Takes allot of ellbow grease.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

damage by lugs, junk unless very rare. but alloys with lip damage or a crack, can be drilled and welded by good shop.me and few buds have save many old alloy rims.then glass beed and polish or powder coat them.my old 15 x10  slots had a crack, only $40 to weld at a sprint car shop.
but never found any shop to touch any chrome rims.they can be cleaned up and may last 1-2 years if mostly dry.
