Engine starting Help

my 68..the 440 ran but had 2 cracked valves. I sent heads to the shop got em fixed.
While they were in shop decided go through the block see what I bought.
Well have everything back together and having hard time getting it going again.
440 w/915 heads, has mild cam, mallory unitle distributor no vacuum.

It turns over fine, after a couple cranks, then shoots gas out carb - thinking reversion...it will back fire sometimes as well.
I double checked TDC )blancer mark lines up perfect) and checked rotor pointer with distributor pointer line up (which is right beween to 2 terminals of the cap?? which seems odd)..

Suspect distributor, valves, cam timing issue. Carb is good pulled off my 71 charger that running just fine.
When I do get back fire or smoke outta carb, sometimes I can hear it in the valve cover pretty good (valces staying slightly open?).

I have done this couple times before with other 440's no problem,nevre had electronic dist....dont really want to start teaing all down again....ideas??
I guess start pull valve covers and verify valves operate throught the cycle??

Thought ask those with alot more knowledge than myself. I am sure I get it figured out at some point, but any suggestions tips appreciated!

Is the rotor pointing at number 1 on the distributor cap? sounds like its timing issue. Are you advancing and retarding the dist. to get it to fire? Timing marks will line up on TDC  compression and exhaust stroke, make sure your on the compression stroke.

Thanks for the input...yeah I adv and ret the timing trying to get er to fire.
I was still thinking off on my TDC 180 out or something.
You know how it is when just not getting it, helps to take the nite off, clear the mind, a few drinks, ask the masses, and usually tomorrow brings the light bulb.

I appreciate suggestions...I do think it is timing as well, but sure was not obvious today.

If it all went easy, would not be any fun right?
