Estimate build date from VIN

I have heard it is possible to estimate a build date from the VIN sequence. Is that possible for a -68? My Charger has 309861 as the last six digits in the VIN. Fender tag states March 8 as build date.

What do you guys here say?

Is there a reason to make you think your Fender Tag is not an original?   :scratchchin:

SPD's and VIN's do have a general correlation, but they are not 100% sequential.  There can be some variation (usually a matter of just a few days).  As tan top stated also, the assembly plant is an important piece of that puzzle.

The assembly plant is B. I'm quite sure the fender tag is original, it does look original and shows real signs of age...  :D Unfortunately I don't have the build sheet so I cannot tie the VIN to the SO and SPD, although everything looks allright with stampings and date codes...

I read in Galens books that it might be possible to estimate a date from the VIN so I'm just curious if that's possible... I have seen some thread about it but I don't understand how it would be possible to put a date using the VIN. Guess if you have statistics about some cars you could make up some kind of "timeline" on the VIN's and take it from there... Guess there's no data from Chrysler that can be used? Read somewhere about this being lost in a fire...?  :shruggy:

I'm quite new to Mopars and is interested in the history of these cars so that's why I'm curious... I found this forum to be the best there is learn about these cars...  :2thumbs:

Ah, I forgot about the '68 Fender Tag & VIN issue - which explains your interest in the SPD & VIN correlation.  Guess that's yet another reason to prefer '69s...  :boxing_smiley:

There isn't any Chrysler-issued data to use for making the SPD/VIN connection for most models (there are a few exceptions such as the Daytonas and some models that used standardized SPD's like A12's and Superbirds).  However, on a forum/board this size there is usually someone around with a car from that model year and plant with a similar VIN sequence -- or someone who has collected a decent-enough data sample size on their own -- to get the SPD in a pretty close date range.  In your case, no one is going to be able to say with 100% certainty what that tag read without the Broadcast Sheet... maybe 90%+ certain, but not 100%.

From what I've seen, that VIN and SPD would be consistent with other cars.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Another reason Registries are so helpful.   :2thumbs:

For the right reasons' that is.

In the meantime, this looks close.  If you knew how many cars a day they were averaging, plus how long between SPD, drivetrain installed & delivered, you should be able to get close enough  :shruggy::
