When I bought my Charger in 1990 it had a junk 383 somebody stuck in it so it would run. A friend found a 68 HP 440 for me to use and I ran it in the car for many years. Its out of the car now and I am now running a crate motor.
I got to thinking about that engine and took a look at the stampings on it today. The VIN on the back of the block near the oil pressure sending unit has 8B296888 and the flat pad by the distributor has 2-22 HP. From my searching around the net I think this is a Hamtramck block?

I am not sure what they would of been building in February - Chargers? maybe somebody knows?

"So far so good, but now we will look for the VIN! On 1968 big block engines, the VIN is located on the back curved part of the block where the transmission bolts on. Looking at this one, we find an "8" for the 1968 model year, then a "C" for the assembly plant, in this case, Jefferson, Michigan. They only built C-bodies there, so this motor came in a Fury, Chrysler New Yorker, or something like that. The next 6 digits are the last part of the VIN. So this motor isn't the original one for my 68 R/T, but it is the next best thing. It is the correct year, and the assembly date is exactly the same as my car's build date. If you look at my fendertag, the three numbers left of the shipping order number "112" stand for January 12, 1968."

I am no expert, but I believe Chrysler was stamping the blocks and transmissions on the top in 68 and then moved it to a location by the oil pan in 69. At lease my 68 block has no numbers stamped where your pic shows. At least my 70 engine had it by the oil pan and nothing by the oil sending unit. I know its a long shot, but it would be nice to reunite the engine with the car it came out of, but I have no idea what that car model could of been.
