So I know a little of their history - that they were put together for a TV show, etc.

But where they a "real" band (ie. that at least played their own instruments) at any point?. I know Neil Diamond wrote their best known song, but did they ever actually write any of their own music, or were they backed by an army of professional songwriters and musicians?

as musicians, yes they were. when they were picked, many musicians went to the auditions to apply for the job. as far as writing any of their own music, i guess check the record label to see the song writer/composer. did they actually play on the albums? i guess it should say on the cover some where, but i dont know that either.

They did write their own material & play instruments, but the TV studio refused to let them use it. If I recall, Mike Nesmith had the most success writing, & wrote country tunes for a long time. He didn't want to be stereotyped as a Monkee either.

There was a big do to about the band and their record albums.
Apparently some of them they did not play the instruments and studio musicians were used and only their voices were used. I guess they were not good enought to record the albums (can you say milli vanilli). They did actually perform and a trailer was build to tow behind the car that turned into a stage. I heard that the stage was used several times and then was 86ed for obvious reasons. (lame and corney)

Fred

Never seen that before. That's interesting.
