Monkees Singer Davy Jones Dies



Davy Jones, the lead singer of the 1960s  rock band The Monkees has died. He was 66.

An official from the Martin County, Fla. medical examiner's office confirmed to ABC News that the office has been notified of Jones' death and is is "currently evaluating whether or not the medical examiners office will take jurisdiction."

Representatives for Jones did not immediately respond to ABCNews.com's requests for comment. Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica, and four daughters from previous marriages.

The British born Jones joined The Monkees in 1965 and fronted a stable of rock hits, including "Daydream Believer" and "I'm a Believer." The band was formed as part of a TV series about a rock band also called "The Monkees." When the show got canceled in 1971, the group, which included Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith, broke up.

They reunited in various incarnations, most recently last spring for a tour through England and America. A second leg of the tour was slated for fall 2011 but the dates were axed without explanation in August.

Peter Tork was at the Barrett-Jackson auction this spring looking for cars, and got on tv for a small interveiw with Speed.

A couple of songs from a cd they put out in the 1980s. I believe it was their last cd with new material.

They always struck me as basically a boy-band that was hastily fabricated to cash in on the teenybopper appeal of the early Beatles.  I don't know if that perception is accurate or not.

Conception and casting

In the early 1960s, aspiring filmmakers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider had formed Raybert Productions and were trying to get a foot in the door in Hollywood. Inspired by the Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night, the duo decided to develop a television series about a fictional rock 'n' roll group.[1] In April, 1965, Raybert sold the series idea to Screen Gems,[2] and by August, a pilot script titled "The Monkeys" was completed by Paul Mazursky and Larry Tucker.[3] Rafelson has said that he had the idea for a TV series about a music group as early as 1960, but had a hard time interesting anyone in it until 1965, by which time rock and roll music was firmly entrenched in pop culture.

Wow, Grew up listening to those boys, and many other great ones. It was pretty cool watching rock and roll change up through the 60's, 70's and some of the 80's... After that it pretty much went into the crapper.

If I remember right, one of those boys mother is who developed White Out.
