What do you guys think about a color change on a sorta low mileage(42K) nicely restored car with all the documents and numbers?

After seeing the myth thread I instantly fell in love with the FK5 Bird  :faint: and would love to change my OH-SO-COMMON Green to that, But Im affraid I would kill any future value without tearing it apart to color change it back. I have the tag and sheet, matching numbers everywhere, and about 95% original metal( Thats for you Troy!  :poke:)

Being that I still got you at 100% original metal, next coffee break,,, it's on you....  :nana:

Man, you have to think long and hard on this one...............
1. Are you going to keep the car for a long time and not think of it as an investment?
2. Do you really love the Burnt Orange? ( I love that color, especially on a '70 Charger)
3. Finally, put into the equation that "Life is too short, enjoy yourself"..........

I think it is the best color on a Bird.....

...as others said...if you plan to keep the car forever and diminished value is of little importance, go for it

DAY CLONA

While a Superbird in just about any color is a "cool" ride,...Black, or Burnt Orange are just about the 2 sharpist colors to have one in.. IMHO, original or not, IMHO Burnt Orange with a Burnt Orange interior would be the way I'd go if building one,...No offense, but the Lime, or Orange Superbirds are a bit "played"..IMHO

Aero426

Green Superbirds are always in demand.    It's a good color.     I also really like FK5, but I would hesitate to change an already nice Bird of any color.

WINGIN IT

I would definitely be hesistant to color change a number's matching documented Superbird, ESPECIALLY with a color only die-hard fans would like.

I'd buy a Burnt Orange Bird over any other color without a second thought. Then again, if you're concerned about investments, value, or whatever, don't worry about what I think because I don't think any car is worth more than a house.  :Twocents:

15-20 +++  years ago  i would of said  nooooo , paint it as per fender tag color code  :yesnod:
this train of thought still holds true today , with any mopar   :Twocents: :scratchchin:
but perhaps as i've got older  , realised life is too short ! paint it what ever color  you want & what ever makes you happy!  :yesnod: as Long as  its not an unrestored survivor car !!
although i would have a hard time doing that to a already restored car thats numbers matching & stuff  , but a rotted out wreck of a  body shell with every thing missing , &  with the local AMD supplier as your new best buddy ,  is another matter !
think i know what i'm trying to say , but just read this back & it sounds a bit confusing  :-\

I like the idea, and I LOVE the FK5 bird.  BUT...

I know you've had the car for a long time.  I tossed around the idea of painting the B5 car a different color-or at least update it to the new B5 on the Challenger.  In the end, we were just so used to having it B5 we redid it that way.

also, consider all of the idiots that will come up to you at car shows and tell you about the green one that 'looked just like this one' that used to be in the area.  that alone would make me paint it green again

Its your car, do what you want to.  However, if it were ME, and it was a numbers matching car with paperwork, I would paint it back to what it was born with originally.  No need to change anything that is that complete already.  Repainting it any other color would be a slap in the face to the car since it has survived all these years with all of its original born with stuff.

Except the engine compartment, trunk, underside, and door jambs will still be lime green.

I wouldn't personally change the color - even though I love that color and think it would look awesome on a Bird. Doing major changes like that is better for clones or cars that had lots of repair and/or are missing tags and documentation.

Over the decades, I've heard more guys say, "I should have painted it (fill in the blank), I really loved that color",...rather than "I'm glad I painted it the original color", the self induced "ass-kicking" comes after it's all assembled, and then they have to live with it.....

If I had an RR1 '68 Coronet R/T vert, the other car would be built the way I would have ordered/bought new.  Not many people can say their 2nd car is a Superbird.  But if I had your two cars the '68 would be my favorite.

In the process of restoring my bird and the paint job will run me in excess of $10K.    In your case - it would probably run in excess of $15K, because of disassembly required.

If you think you will get $15K worth of fun and personal satisfaction - paint the car and have at it.    If you will always regret doing it and wish you had an extra $15K laying around - don't do it.

Pretty simple call in my book.

Scaregrabber

Allow double the cost of a complete colour change.Say $20k for a quality job when you change it now and then another $20k before you go to sell it to make it right again.

Sheldon

FJ5WING

I appreciate the continuing opinions but I have decided to not change the color.

Im curious Sheldon why/how you figure it to be an additional 20K to change the color of a car thats not painted?
wingless now, but still around.

pettybird

sheldon is just stopping by and doesn't know your car is in pieces.

Scaregrabber

Sorry: I thought it was a fully restored car at this time. In that case there is no cost on the initial colour change. But honestly I would allow for the price of a colour change in the future if you wanted to sell it for full value. Where I live a quality job costs $20k on a perfect body.

Sheldon

Maybe I should repaint my bird back to it's original color of yellow... Don't think so. At least not right now. I will admit that yellow would be a lot cooler to the touch on those 117 degree days we've been getting the last couple of years.

Most people think my bird's a clone. Maybe it's because of the black paint, air grabber hood, the lack of a vinyl top, the missing front rubber bumper and the absence of a few decals.

If I were totally disassembling my car for some reason, I would most likely paint it back to the correct color. At my age, you have to start thinking about possibly selling it at some point. And, the correct color is worth somewhere between 10 and 20k more in my opinion. Unless it was some famous car that had the color changed early in it's life. Wait, that might apply to my car. It's been black since the early 80's and it's been known as the Black Ice car for most of it's life.

Anyway, I say go back to the correct color.
