I may need a 440 picking up from a guy's garage, what's the best way to do this as I don't have any hoists or anything? As far as I know it doesn't have the ancillaries attached so is this something 2 or 3 strong guys would be able to lift into a van? Any idea how much a 440 weighs? Thanks

Troy

Fully assembled, long block, short block, or bare block? I have personally seen 2 guys (much bigger/stronger than me) pick up a 440 long block and load it into my trailer. A fully equipped 440 is in the 670 pound range. A block by itself is over 200 pounds I think and the heads are probably 40-50 each. Crank is about the same. The iron intake feels like 30 pounds but is probably a little less. If necessary, remove stuff until you can pick it up - but you'll still want at least one friend to help.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

yep  bare 440 block 200 i think  may be 220 pounds  , but felt much heavier  , have lifted a few with a buddy ,  up about  3 & a half feet ,  biggest problem is holding it  , wear thick welding gloves turn the block on its side .  one hand  grab hold of the bore , the other oil pan rail !
moving a complete 440 , noooo would not chance it, been & done stuff , other motors , axles , half of  cars etc like that for years when i was younger  , got back problems now to prove it  :icon_smile_blackeye: , your be in the Accedent & emergency department , like Troy says strip it ,   iron heads  waterpump housing , intake  , iron exhausts manifolds  off !!  , even with all that off , your still introuble  trying to drag it across the garage floor  :Twocents: :popcrn:

Four years ago (age 50) I carried a 440 block from the truck to the work bench, just to show my 17 year old son, that the old man still could. After that I decided not to do it again. It would take 4 guys to safely pick up an assembled 440.

By a hoist at Harbor freight or rent /barrow one. A 1 ton come along at Tractor supply will work. An old tire will help stabilize the engine in the back of a pickup with a couple of tiedowns straps. Set the sump in the center of the tire.

I pulled 3 440's out of 72-74 monacos years ago and loaded them all at once in the back of a 91 Dakota, lets just say the truck was a little lower in the rear and very TIGHT!!!
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.
